LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Former Tyson Foods Inc. chief executive Donald J. Tyson, who led his family's poultry company from being a regional producer to dominance in the industry while instilling a corporate culture that mixed hard work and enjoyment, died Thursday. He was 80.
Company spokesman Gary Mickelson said Tyson died from complications from cancer, and passed away at home with his family.

S. consumers earned less and spent less for a second straight year in 2010. The government report released Tuesday offered a deeper look at how Americans have adjusted their spending after the worst recession since the Great Depression. People spent less last year on food, cut back on entertainment and eating out at restaurants and gave less to charity. At the same time, they paid more for gas and health care - trends that have continued this year. Total spending by consumers fell 2 percent last year, according to the Labor Department's annual survey of consumer behavior. SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Approximately 300 people at a Tyson Foods chicken processing plant in northwest Arkansas were evacuated and 173 sent to local hospitals after an accidental mixture of chemicals created a chlorine gas inside part of the facility Monday morning.
The workers were forced from Tyson's Berry Street plant in Springdale, company spokesman Gary Mickelson said. Those who were suffering from breathing problems and headaches were sent to one of five area hospitals, but no injuries appeared life-threatening.

A Kansas jury awarded about $503,000 in favor of current and former hourly employees in a suit against Tyson Foods and Tyson Fresh Meats.

LITTLE ROCK - Only two people remained in the hospital late Thursday after an accident caused chlorine gas to fill part of a Tyson Foods Inc. plant in northwest Arkansas.
Company spokesman Gary Mickelson said Thursday neither person was in intensive care. More than 170 were taken to the hospital Monday morning after someone accidentally poured a chlorine solution into a drum of mixed acids.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Roast beef and ham that was distributed to Walmart delicatessens nationwide and sold in sandwiches has been recalled because it might be tainted with potentially harmful bacteria, the officials said Tuesday.
No illnesses have been reported from the 380,000 pounds of meat products that were made by Tyson Foods unit Zemco Industries in Buffalo and might contain Listeria, said Gary Mickelson, spokesman for Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson.
