An accountant at the center of the controversy about who should become the Bergen County auditor has turned down the freeholder chairman's nomination for the job, which is worth $368,000, according to a letter obtained by The Record on Tuesday.
The two-paragraph letter, which is dated Feb. 24 and signed by Gary Higgins of the auditing firm Lerch, Vinci & Higgins, requests that Higgins' name be withdrawn from consideration for the county auditor job.

Bergen County Freeholder Chairman John Driscoll ended his efforts to hire Gary Higgins as county auditor Wednesday after learning that Higgins does not want to be considered for the job, but he did not rule out continuing to oppose County Executive Kathleen Donovan's choice for the position.
A resolution to hire Higgins, a principal accountant at the Fair Lawn-based Lerch, Vinci & Higgins auditing firm, was scheduled for consideration at Wednesday night's freeholder meeting but was pulled from the agenda late in the afternoon.

MEDWAY - A local man was out on bail Tuesday after being charged with selling prescription drugs illegally from his home at 3 Jones Road, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officials said Tuesday.
Chad Brackett, 28, was charged Thursday with Class B unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, said Gary Higgins, a supervisory special agent at Maine DEA.
