LEWISTON -- The season will end with one box left unchecked on the Lewiston Maineiacs' list of teams to beat.
Montreal capitalized on a delay-of-game penalty, jumped on a chance to score a shorthanded goal and snuck one through Andrey Makarov he'd probably like to have back -- in in 4:07 of game time - - late in the second period, and Jean-Francois Berube withstood another comeback attempt late in the third as the Junior defeated the Maineiacs 4-3 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Thursday night.

Leonte Carroo lists a lot of reasons for choosing to play college football at Rutgers, but high on the list is the chance - chance -- to compete for a national championship.
That would be great to play in a BCS game one day," Carroo said by phone the other day, echoing the dream of many a top high school recruit. For now, Carroo can theoretically realize his dream with the Scarlet Knights, whose Big East affiliation guarantees entry into the BCS' season-ending title equation.

HUNTINGTON - As most college football coaches are wont to do, Doc Holliday is guarded with information concerning game plans and personnel decisions and injuries. Add missed tackles to the list. The Marshall football team has placed extra emphasis on tackling this week with No. 13 Virginia Tech (3-0) coming to Huntington this Saturday for the first time in 71 years to face the Thundering Herd (1-2). Last week, Ohio gained 559 yards total offense the most since the Hokies piled up 605 yards against the Herd two seasons ago. The MU offense had six first-half turnovers against the Bobcats last Saturday, and that couldnt have helped the defense, but the D didnt do itself any favors, either. If youre in single digits in missed tackles for a game theres a great chance youre going to win that...

Its the springtime National Signing Day, and maybe its a good day to look back as well as ahead on Kanawha Valley fortunes in major college mens basketball. Too often, it seems, talent in our own backyard is downgraded as much by locals watching the game as coaches recruiting in it. There seems to be this attitude that were just not good enough to play with the big boys. In some ways, thats an understandable notion. Its not like area courts are still producing Jerry Wests, Hot Rod Hundleys, Chris Smiths or even Brett Nelsons on a regular basis. However, major college basketball is a vast world 345 teams this past season and theres plenty of room for plenty of talent. Sometimes, it just takes time. Sometimes, it just takes smarts. When a player picks his school, he needs to be realist...

I've resisted the urge to buy a new television, which is difficult this time of year. Luckily, Jill's sausage bread and other fine munchies will make me forget all about the fact that we'll be watching the Super Bowl on a 10-year-old, 200-pound television. I might fall for one of those Big Game commercials next year.
Holiday cheer: We have too many holidays, but that shouldn't stop us from adding the Super Bowl to the list. The game is played on a Sunday, of course, so the day of observance would be Monday. Heck, there's a 50-50 chance school will be called off on any given February day, so this move makes sense from a parental stress point of view.

PITTSBURGH Once again, two games in a season werent enough for the Ravens and Steelers, division opponents who cant stand each other yet cant seem to stop playing one another. For the second time in three seasons and the third time in a decade, theyll meet in the playoffs their eighth game in the last three seasons alone. And it will be in Pittsburgh, where January football is about as uninviting as it gets for an opposing team. And where the Ravens have never won in the postseason. Somehow, both teams figured it would come down to this: beat the other, and advance to the AFC championship game. Any other scenario almost would have been incomplete for two rivals who finished the season with 12-4 records, and whose two previous games ended in a combined score of 27-27. The Ravens figure...
