The second annual Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment Conference is scheduled Monday and Tuesday at the National Center for Employee Development in Norman.
The conference is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and the Oklahoma Association for Problem and Compulsive Gambling.

SALEM, Ore. With the state getting ready to offer electronic slot machines, the 2005 Legislature will come under pressure to fully fund gambling addiction treatment programs that could become a lot busier.

With Pennsylvania moving full speed ahead to legalized gambling, one local organization is trying to understand how this may impact area youth. Gateway Rehabilitation Center recently conducted a survey of 419 patients to determine the seriousness of gambling problems and addictions among young people. Among the study's findings is that nearly one third of adolescents in treatment showed some degree of a gambling addiction, while only 19 percent of adults showed any signs of addiction. They also learned that 25 percent of adolescents studied favored Internet gambling, most adolescents looked forward to legalized gambling and usually turned to relatives, friends and theft to cover gambling debts. The project ro integrate problem gambling services into the DPH/BSAS treatment system began in 1988, with one DPH/BSAScontracted agency offering problem gambling counseling services (out of more than 200 eligible agencies DPH/BSAS contracted with), in 1998, DPH/BSAS contracted with 16 substance abuse agencies for problem gambling services, where at least one counselor at each location had attended Council trainings on treating gambling disorders.

As a nation, we should be bolder in our "war on drugs" by dismantling that fiasco altogether. We need to accept drug use for what it is: a harmful habit, but not a crime. It's a dangerous addiction just like alcoholism, tobacco dependency, or gambling. Our goal should be rehabilitation through treatment - not incarceration.
Further, the billions of dollars we continue to spend on drug law enforcement should be recognized for what it is - a political scandal. As it is now, organized crime and vicious street gangs control drug trafficking, which results in daily horrors of death and mayhem.
