GALVESTON, Texas - Residents of this hurricane-wrecked island city launched an ill-advised attempt to return to their crippled hometown Wednesday, but instead fumed in hours of gridlocked traffic only to be turned away at the bridge.
Traffic backed up for 20 miles along Interstate 45, the one route onto Galveston Island, jockeying for position with utility workers, repair crews and police trying to begin repairs to the city wrecked by Hurricane Ike five days ago.

Mr. [Bertschler] warned of a nightmare hurricane that would rival Galveston's infamous September 1900 storm, which, like [Carla], is said to have been a Category 4 (out of a possible 5) tropical cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale. Unlike Carla's, the eye of the 1900 storm passed right over Galveston. Its 15-foot storm surge completely swamped the island, where the highest elevation was then just 8.7 feet In response to that storm, the U.S. Corps of Engineers erected a 17-foot seawall, and the city raised its grade so that its topography slopes down northward from Seawall Boulevard, draining floodwaters into Galveston's ship channel and bay. After that, the city considered itself pretty well protected.
What did we think would happen, Mr. Bertschler had asked us, if a big storm...

Galveston breaks roughly into two camps-those who would fight Mother Nature and those who would bend to her will. Jerry Mohn, the owner of a chemical distribution company in Houston, belongs decisively to the former group, the "defenders." And he has a name for the other side: "retreatists." "Goodbye island," he says, summing up the geohazards map with mock irony. Then he gets serious. "But this is what happens if we don't do something to protect the island. And it's going to cost a hell of a lot of money.
Geologist John Anderson says he's tired of explaining the map, and the science behind it, to city officials. "If they do not understand it, they should not be in public office," he says sternly. An exchange he had with a city planning commissioner last August is telling. "We have to ...

GALVESTON, Texas - Restoring the flow of sediment to Gulf Coast wetlands and barrier islands that are key wildlife habitats and provide crucial protection from storms is one of the biggest challenges officials face as they seek to restore a region whose long-time ecological problems came into focus after last year's disastrous oil spill.
The Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force held its fifth and next-to-last public meeting on Monday in Galveston, itself an eroding barrier island in Texas. The group was tasked by President Barack Obama with restoring, rebuilding and protecting the Gulf of Mexico and the communities nearby. Members say they hope to identify and expand successful projects in Gulf states, and create the first holistic approach to restoring an ecosystem that is cruci...
