Histories of the rising popularity of Danish modern furniture in both Denmark and the United States have traditionally ascribed its success to the inherent beauty of Danish design. This article argues that Danish modern furniture succeeded for two other reasons. First, through the creation of powerful narratives, or stories, that framed the way consumers made sense of this furniture; and, second, through the calculated development of a network of individuals and organizations whose goal was to promote and legitimize these narratives.

In 1971 when my husband, Mike, and I got married, we moved into a three-room rock house. It's the same house we live in today but with rooms added on later. But in those days, we were happy to have those three small rooms. One big problem was there wasn't a closet in the house, anywhere!
Above is patent drawing of an early coat hanger designed by Albert Parkhouse in the early 1900s. It was his response to employee complaints that there weren't enough coat hooks at the Timberlake Wire and Novelty Co. The coat hanger changed the design of wardrobes forever.
