A Florida man has sued BMW, claiming his leased 335i had a faulty fuel pump that caused it to suddenly decelerate. The suit, filed on Oct. 27 by Devesh M. Nirmul, in U.S. District Court in Newark, claims the German car manufacturer knew about the problem but kept it quiet. The company's U.S. headquarters, BMW of North America LLC is located in Woodcliff Lake and is named as a defendant in the suit, which seeks class-action status.
I live in Houston, and on a typical 104-degree day this past summer, I took my son's car to run some errands and stopped first to fill the tank. I then drove to my first stop, about 15 minutes away, and went in to shop. I came out, started the car and it rattled and died. I walked over to a nearby auto-repair chain, told them my story and the guy asked me if my tank was empty when I stopped for gas. He immediately said that I had cracked the fuel pump by putting cold gasoline into a hot gas tank. Well, $650 later, the car is running again, but everyone I have told this to says I was scammed. - Hart Ray: Wait a second, Hart. I'm writing down this story. I may be able to make a few boat payments with this "cracked fuel pump" idea.
We propose to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Airbus Model A300 series airplanes; Model A310 series airplanes; Model A300 B4-600, B4-600R, and F4-600R series airplanes, and Model C4-605R Variant F airplanes (collectively called Model A300-600 series airplanes). This proposed AD was prompted by reports of cracked fuel pump canister hoods located in fuel tanks. This proposed AD would require replacing any hood halves of fuel pump canisters that are cracked. We are proposing this AD to prevent any detached canister hood fragments/debris from being ingested into the fuel feed system, and the metallic debris inside the fuel tank resulting in a potential source of ignition and consequent fire or explosion.
Question: I just had my fuel pump replaced and was shocked- first at the price, and then by the fact that it was in the gas tank. Why in the world should this cost almost a thousand dollars? The mechanic did say the gas tank was very hard to remove. On my older cars, all of them to the best of my knowledge, the pump was a $30 part bolted to the side of the engine. Answer: Ouch! That's a lot of money. Older carbureted engines used a fairly inexpensive mechanical fuel pump mounted to the side of the engine. Mechanical pumps were fairly quiet and reliable, but they were capable of creating only a moderate amount of fuel pressure. Modern fuel-injected vehicles need fairly high fuel pressure, depending on the system, up to 80 pounds per square inch. The best way to do thi...

DEAR Tom and Ray: My husband and I have been married for two months. Recently I found out that his 1997 Dodge Dakota has been having a problem. He says, "You just have to burp it sometimes." What does that actually mean? He reports that his fuel pump gets "bubbles" in it, so he bangs on the fuel tank until the fuel can run again. Last Saturday when we were running errands, it happened twice. It was very embarrassing.

It was embarrassing. He initially was using a long-handled wood-splitting maul, but I told him that was not a good idea, so he upgraded to a rubber mallet. Please tell me how long he can get away with this before his car will blow up - or just die. We are not in a financial crisis; he can purchase a new vehicle. He does not plan to have his fuel pump replaced. He says he'll drive his truck until it really dies...

Investigators looking for the cause of the July 17 plane crash in South Portland that killed two men are exploring the fuel system as a possible culprit, but they may never know for sure. The National Transportation Safety Board posted its preliminary findings on the crash Thursday on its website.
