The "confidential informant" who appeared to be the pivotal witness against Millington Mayor Richard Hodges lashed out Monday against a TBI investigation, saying Hodges is guilty only of gambling in friendly poker games at a local repair shop. The witness, Transmission Doctors owner Marlin Roberts, said Hodges never used his office to solicit bribes or threaten him for money, crimes suggested in a TBI affidavit filed on Friday.

years ago July 13, 1911: Paul Griffith, 12, died from a gunshot wound to the head, four days after a "friendly" scuffle for a revolver. The other youth, Emmett Shepard, said it was an accident. A witness agreed, so the coroner's jury ruled accordingly: accidental.
Witness Immunity Has Deep Historical Roots The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Briscoe v. LaHue5 is the seminal case on witness immunity issues in judicial proceedings, providing the basic framework for witness immunity analysis.6 Issued in 1983, the decision analyzes both the common law history of witness immunity and the legal bases for witness immunity.7 In the Briscoe case, the plaintiffs brought a civil suit against police officers under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 based on the officers' testimonies in the plaintiffs' underlying criminal trials that had resulted in convictions.8 In those trials, police officers testified for the prosecution to information later alleged to be knowingly false.9 In each of the plaintiffs' civil cases, the district court granted a motion for summary judgment an...

I'm terribly sorry, but if someone's life depends on it, his career depends on it, you don't go on assumptions," said Wolfram Meier-Augenstein, an expert in the kind of testing that produced Landis' positive results for synthetic testosterone.

After the 8-year-old dog was led into the packed hearing room, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles voted 3-0 to deny early release to 23-year-old Juan Daniels of Montgomery, who was sentenced in 2009 to nine years and six months in prison, a record in Alabama in an animal cruelty case.

WEST VALLEY CITY -- Local auto-racing fans earned a chance this past weekend to witness firsthand a vehicle touted as the latest step in creating a mass-market, ecologically friendly automobile. A 2010 G-3 electric-powered pickup truck, manufactured by Global Green Cars, debuted as a pace car for the RMR Super Oval race at Rocky Mountain Raceways on Saturday evening. The West Valley City racing venue is the first to feature the all-electric prototype on its oval track.
It is the sixth day of trial and the mechanical engineer is droning on about shopping cart construction. You can't keep your mind from wandering - and he's your witness. As you scan the courtroom, your patented "sincere, competent and friendly" smile expertly cemented on your face, you notice for the first time just how many people are watching this completely unremarkable premises liability case. Even more surprising, they actually seem to be paying attention. Who are they? They don't look like folks on a day pass from the state hospital next door. They're too old to be a ninth grade civics class on a field trip. Not even the local rag of a newspaper would be desperate enough to cover this case. You don't need Rod Serling to explain this particular phenomenon. These members of the gall...
