  • When a rumor surfaced on a local auto racing website chat room this winter that Humberstone Speedway might switch its weekly race night from Sunday to Friday in 2011, the first response was from a fan wondering why Humberstone was mad at Ransomville Speedway. The fan's conclusion was off the mark, according to officials at both tracks.

  • The writers of the television series "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost" and "Mad Men" were nominated today for the Writers Guild Award for drama series. Nominated for the WGA's comedy series honor were the writers behind "30 Rock," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Glee," "Modern Family" and "The Office.

  • In "American Horror Story," the freaky-deaky new drama that airs Wednesdays on FX, Connie Britton plays Vivien Harmon, a woman who must confront the emotional fallout from her husband's adultery, weird next-door neighbors who regularly break into her house, and the knowledge that the home has been a murder scene on at least one occasion. In other words, Connie Britton - who previously played a football coach's supportive wife on "Friday Night Lights" - is not in Dillon, Texas, anymore. The two-time Emmy nominee recently took a few minutes to chat by phone about the weirdly compelling series and how her attitude toward horror was shaped by wise words from Rob Zombie. Yes, Rob Zombie.

  • It's a life changing injury and each injury is different so families go through a lot of different things," said Canales, director of Gridiron Heroes. "What we try to initially do is be there for the families and guide them through counseling because it could be a very costly injury. "We've had a relationship with the director of 'Friday Night Lights' ever since it was a movie and then turned into a TV series," said Canales. "We helped the writers with the pilot episode because they took part of my son's story and part of David Edward's story for their very first show." "We also work with schools, coaches and administrators to try to guide them on how best to help the families when something like this happens," Canales added. "They sometimes have no clue as to what a spinal cord injur...

  • *Who's who: The six-team division consists of the Clarence Red Devils, Frontier Falcons, Jamestown Red Raiders, Lancaster Redskins, Orchard Park Quakers and West Seneca West Indians. *This year's alignment shift: One of the historically strongest divisions in Western New York -- and that's all sports, not just football -- would have to probably be considered stronger this year after Bennett (one league win) dropped in classification to A South. The remaining six squads have been slugging it out in AA South for a long time.

  • Back in the 19th-century days of the Bear Republic and the Republic of Texas, factions within what is now the Lone Star State advocated expanding the nation's territory all the way west to annex California. In other words, the rivalry is of long standing, to the time when we were countries of our own.

  • *Who's who: The seven-team division consists of the Akron Tigers, Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles, Fredonia Hillbillies, Gowanda Panthers, Lafayette Mighty Violets, JFK Bears and Wilson Lakemen. *This year's alignment shift: There are many changes in this league, which gets beefed up after competing with just five teams last year and has more new faces than old (just three teams return in playoff squads Cleveland Hill, Gowanda and Wilson). The division trades out one champion (I-Prep at Grover won this division last year but has moved down to D) for another in defending Class C titlest Fredonia. Roy-Hart left the division after the schedule was arranged (Roy-Hart has formed a team with Barker which will compete in Section V's Class A) and is replaced by Lafayette. The cit...

  • Who's who: The six-team division consists of the Hutch-Tech Engineers, Kenmore West Blue Devils, Lockport Lions, Niagara Falls Wovlerines, Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons and Riverside Frontiers. Riverside also includes students from non-football playing schools City Honors, Buffalo Arts, MST Seneca and OTC Middle College. Hutch-Tech also includes students from Emerson and daVinci. This year's alignment shift: Like the AA South, this division has dropped from seven to six schools, with longtime members North Tonawanda and Williamsville North having dropped down to Class A North. Niagara-Wheatfield, which has hopped back and forth from A to AA in football, has returned to AA.

  • Northern Highlands hasn't won a league football title in nine years and has decided to shine the spotlight on what could be a special moment. Highlands has installed temporary lights around its artificial turf field and rescheduled its Big North Division V title game against Lakeland from Saturday afternoon to 6 o'clock Friday night.

  • Who's who: The eight-team division consists of the Grand Island Vikings, Kenmore East Bulldogs, McKinley Macks, North Tonawanda Lumberjacks, Starpoint Spartans, Sweet Home Panthers, Williamsville East Flames and Williamsville North Spartans. This year's alignment shift: In a season full of classification changes, two mainstays of AA North slide down to A North. North Tonawanda won the AA North title eight times in a nine-year stretch that concluded with the 2009 state championship, while Williamsville North made the AA playoffs last year. Niagara- Wheatfield moved up to AA North. That leaves the division with eight teams after having seven each last year. The eight-team divisions cause imbalanced league schedules: In the seven-week season, Class A teams will play six...
