Records are made to be broken, as the old saying goes. In muskie fishing, the question is, "Which record? Two groups, The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the International Game Fish Association, each keep fish records. Each lists a different fish as the official record.
HAYWARD, Wis. - When it comes to big fish, Emmett Brown has the best seat on the planet. There had to be a reason to get people to come here," said the executive director of the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. "We needed a landmark.
Seems there are halls of fame for just about everything. There's an Inventors Hall of Fame (Akron, Ohio), Cowgirl Hall of Fame (Fort Worth, Texas); the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame (Hayward, Wis.) and even a Ukelele Hall of Fame ( Duxburg, Mass.)
Every angler not only dreams of catching the big one, they want the biggest one.But getting a potential record in the net is one thing. Documenting a record so it stands up to scrutiny over the long run is another.Take the current controversies over two fishing records, one concerning smallmouth bass and the other concerning muskies. Officials at the International Game Fish Association announced recently they were re-establishing an 11-pound, 15-ounce smallmouth bass that David Hayes of Litchfield, Ky., caught at Dale Hollow Lake on the Tennessee-Kentucky border in 1955 as the world record for that species. The fish measured 27 inches long with a 21 2/3-inch girth.Hayes had registered the fish with Field & Stream magazine, which was the sole record-keeper at that time. The magazine acce...
Taylor Streit has spent the last 40 years catching trout in the Southern Rockies. When it comes to fishing, my father has just about seen it all. He rarely gets excited over fish anymore and, in fact, if you happen to see him at the grocery store you may not want to ask him questions like "How's the fishing?" or "Been catching any?" These questions will likely be answered with a half-hearted smile and an even less enthusiastic response. To really annoy a fishing guide, try saying something like "Oh, you're the guy who gets paid to fish." In fact the fishing business can be quite laborious and requires the same amount of tiring office work and errands that any small business does.

MAPLETON - Jim Modglin has been the main spark behind the Lake Camelot Ice Fishing Derby for years. The tournament is one of the largest celebrations of the frigid style of fishing held in Illinois. Hundreds of people show up every January to dangle waxworms or flashy lures through holes in the hard surface of two small lakes at the housing division in Mapleton near Peoria.

It's funny how events we expect to be routine can turn out to change our lives. That was true about a fishing trip I took in March 1992. I was looking for stories for Hook, Line & Sinker, the fishing column that appears on Thursdays in the sports section.
