  • HILLSDALE DISTRICT -- In March, four French I students at Hillsdale High School took the National French test, "Le Grand Concours," which is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. • On May 31, the United African Organization, a partnership of 20 African immigrant communities, held a summit at the DuSable Museum of African American History, to shed light on immigrants like Azhir. Alie Kabba, executive director of UAO, said that "public eduction" is necessary since African immigrants are often overlooked, or misunderstood. Resources are directed to the community with the largest numbers, which is Latin Americans... The francophone (those from French-speaking African countries) have a language barrier. When I hear about bilingual resources, I think, 'The definition of bilingual has got to go beyond Spanish. It's got to include those in other communities'," Kabba said. The relationship between Africans and African Americans is critical, though plagued by miscommunicat...

  • Each year about this time, my thoughts turn to L'Abri, the influential Christian community founded in March 1955 in the mountains of French-speaking Switzerland. Francis and Edith Schaeffer, the founding couple, tutored a whole generation of evangelical baby boomers through lectures, films and books on how Christianity should influence pop culture, philosophy and art.

  • TriHarLenium captures the spirited evolution of Harlem over the last three decades. "I wanted to express our cultural history, as well as accent the changes that are taking place in Harlem," said [Craig S. Harris]. "We recently crossed the millennium into the 21st century and over the years Harlem has become a trilingual community speaking English, French, and Spanish. The community is rapidly changing from a predominant African American community. Songs like "125" boast lyrics like "We walk that walk/and talk that talk/it's always Uve." And there is the potent "No Gentrification Without Cultural Preservation" and "You'll Find God in Harlem" The lyrics bring a visual aspect to this active musical composition. While Harris says "TriHarLenium" will be recorded in the near friture this is...

  • Fueled by expanding e-government initiatives, heightened security concerns, and a keen desire to enhance the interoperability among various legacy and new systems, governments all over the world are re-examining their information technology (IT) needs and their IT procurement processes. While technology procurement is an important decision for governments, as this article will show, it needs to be made on the merits and not based on express or implicit preferences, both for sound policy reasons and because to do otherwise could very well be illegal. Procurement laws and policies are aimed at ensuring that governments are able to obtain the best technology solution available, irrespective of platform. Equally as important, they are designed to protect the integrity of the governmental pr...

  • Almost 136 years ago, a remarkable man came to Lewiston from his home in Canada. Although he was here for only 26 years, his impact on this community through his devotion to its French-speaking people and their health needs, their education and their potential political power was profound. It's this man's name that is engraved in granite above the entrance of an old and highly respected elementary school, Martel, at the corner of Lisbon Street and East Avenue. In his obituary published in a February 1899 edition of the Lewiston Evening Journal, Dr. Louis Joseph Martel was said to be "regarded by the French citizens with a near approach to hero- worship.

  • FRENCHVILLE - Girls dressed in period dresses and boys in black pantaloons with light colored shirts re-enacted the somber story of the deportation of Acadians from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755. The pupils from the Dr. Levesque Elementary School told of the separation of families, the burning of community buildings and homes, and the dispersal of some 12,000 French-speaking farmers from New Brunswick to Louisiana, France and England because they would not swear allegiance to the king.

  • It's never easy to fill the shoes of a dearly loved head chef, but Larry Laffont is doing that well at Paris 66 Bistro in East Liberty. Laffont, 36, took over Cesar Dubs' position as executive chef in January after the owners of Paris 66, Fred and Lori Rongier, couldn't renew Dubs' working visa. Dubs, who hailed from Brittany, France, was the first chef at Paris 66 Bistro, which opened in June 2009.
