  • Once again, we are asking for help in honoring our state's brave service men and women. Charleston Newspapers would like to publish photos of state residents who have served or are serving with the military in the United States or overseas. The pictures will be published in the Honoring Freedom special section commemorating Charlestons July Fourth celebration. The response from families and those now serving to our previous Honoring Freedom sections has been inspiring. We have published hundreds of pictures of service men and women. We need your support again this year, but we do ask that families send only photos that have not been previously submitted. Please e-mail photos by June 15 to: bsaunders@cnpapers.com

  • It has been more than a year since Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, in an independent report on torture, noted that there is no longer any doubt that Americans committed war crimes. "The only question that remains to be answered," he wrote, "is whether those who ordered the use of torture will be held to account." It now seems safe to say that the answer to Taguba's question is: No, they won't. Except for a handful of enlisted personnel who where foolish enough to take pictures of themselves abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib, no one has been punished for the despicable things our government has done in the last nine years, and no one else is likely to be. (There are reputedly more pictures showing even worse abuse, but when it appeared that the American Civil Liberties Union might secu...

  • washington | The Defense Department is refusing to do a speedy review of a Freedom of Information Act request for graphic photos of Osama bin Laden's corpse, setting the stage for a protracted battle over access to the images. The department said The Associated Press did not demonstrate an urgent or compelling need for the photos or show that the information has a particular value that would be lost if not provided in an expedited manner. As a result, it is not clear when or if the photos will be provided

  • URBANA -- A 12-foot steel support beam from the World Trade Center arrived Saturday to become a part of a Sept. 11 memorial at Freedom Grove. The beam arrived about 1:30 p.m. on the bed of a tow truck bearing iconic photos of the burning towers and draped in an American flag.

  • WASHINGTON - The Defense Department is refusing to do a speedy review of a Freedom of Information Act request for graphic photos of Osama bin Laden's corpse, setting the stage for a protracted battle over access to the images. In a letter to The Associated Press, the department said the AP did not demonstrate an urgent or compelling need for the photos or show that the information has a particular value that would be lost if not provided in an expedited manner. As a result, it is not clear when or if the photos will be provided.

  • In the final scene the Soviets have withdrawn from Czechoslovakia and the Rolling Stones are taking the stage in Prague. It's an exuberant if admittedly sentimental conclusion, but the sense of joy is contagious. The world's greatest rock 'n' roll band has come to town and it's impossible for us not to get swept up in Jan's excitement. To some it may only be music, but to [Jan] and his fellow Czechoslovakians the Stones' appearance signifies the end of totalitarian rule and the arrival of freedom. The production's numerous musical interludes (the rock 'n' roll playlist is spectacular) features photos of ordinary people (including some from [Blanka Zizka]'s own family) whose lives are impacted by the changing political landscape in Czechoslovakia. In a play about transformation (even the...

  • Photo epiphany President Obama The White House said it will now seek to block the release of photographs collected as part of military probes into accusations of prisoner abuse in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Pentagon had agreed last month to release the images by May 28, acceding to an American Civil Liberties Union request under the Freedom of Information Act. "The President strongly believes that the release of these photos, particularly at this time, would only serve the purpose of inflaming the theaters of war, jeopardizing U.S. forces, and making our job more difficult in places like Iraq and Afghanistan," a White House official said, echoing arguments made on these pages.

  • Military mom Laura McCarthy is surrounded mostly by looks of disgust, heads shaking in disapproval, down-turned thumbs and shouts of "You should be ashamed of yourself," "Do you think your son is proud of you being here?" and "Your son is fighting for your freedom to be standing there!" A lot of people simply ignore the moms with their signs featuring photos of their handsome young sons. A few people offer words of support, and even a few non-supporters are kind enough to respectfully acknowledge their presence and engage in meaningful dialogue. No one can answer the protesters' question: "Why do you continue to pretend that Iraq posed a threat great enough to justify our invasion and occupation?" After [George Bush] speaks, Laura moves to the sidewalk outside the Center. Surely, Bush m...

  • A local 16-year old girl won the grand prize in the Freedom Communications Faces of Fall Photo Contest. Out of 467 photos submitted by 269 people across the country, Katie Rhodes' photo of her bare-shouldered female friend earned the judges votes and netted her a $1,200 camera.
