For the next nine years Mao's government suppressed religious freedom, persecuted and brutalized Buddhist monks, forced Buddhist nuns into marriages with Chinese soldiers, and imposed economic collectivization on a pastoral and peaceful people. Minimal Intrusion What would at least assure the minimal political intrusion into the individual's affairs, even if he found himself under a government not of his own choosing, was the reduction of state power to protection of life, liberty, and property in a social order of voluntary association and free-market exchange.

The main purpose of this paper is to offer a somewhat novel theory of deep democracy and economic justice. Part of the novelty consists in considering radical uncertainty and indeterminacy under postmodern conditions. I claim that even under such conditions a plausible theory of deep democracy and economic justice can make sense. I have tried to consider the postmodernist position with regards to democracy and economic justice by paying careful attention to the arguments of leading postmodernists. Barring a nihilism that rules out arguments entirely, such a procedure seems reasonable. I have offered as an alternative to natural law and transcendental norms an account of Hegel's explorations. As Winfield and others have pointed out, this approach is also anti-foundational. However, by fo...

Founded in 1942, CORE is the third-oldest and one of the "Big Four" civil rights groups in the United States. Our website: www.core-online.org shows that "from the protests against (Jrm Crow' laws of the 40's through he "Sit-ins" of the 50b, the "Freedom Rides" of the 60s, the cries for "Self-Determination" in the 70s, "Equal Opportunity" in the 80s, community development in the 90s, to the current demand for equal access to information, CORE has championed true equality. As the "shock troops" and pioneers of the civil rights movement, CORE has paved the way for the nation to follow" .

While the Freedom Party is already a true political party by way of self-determination, in order to become 'state recognized,' the party must run a candidate for governor and receive 50,000 votes. Thus, one of the immediate goals of the Freedom Party is to gather the required 15,000 signatures from July 6 to August 17 to get the party's candidates on the ballot. New York City Councilmember [Charles Barron] has stepped up to the challenge as the Freedom Party's candidate for governor. A larger slate will be announced at the statewide event, as well as organizing the petitioning campaign and making the call for members. There will also be an important discussion about . the Freedom Party mission and platform.

Discussing the origins of Kwanzaa, Dr. [Maulana Karenga] stated that he created Kwanzaa in the midst of the Black Freedom Movement and that Kwanzaa represents an act of cultural self-determination. He said that he created Kwanzaa for three basic reasons: "to reaffirm Black people's rootedness in African culture; to establish a time when Africans all over the world could come together and reinforce the bonds between them and meditate on the meaning of being African in the world; and to introduce and reinforce the importance of African communitarian values, values that stress and strengthen family, community and culture." And, he said, the hub and hinge on which the holiday turns are the communitarian values, Nguzo Saba. For more information on Kwanzaa visit: www.OfficialKwanzaaWebsite.org.

This observation is well understood. While Britain supports America's opposition to the Hague hearings, its foreign minister, Jack Straw, has written that the wall is "unlawful." Another ministry official, who inspected the "security fence," said it should be on the Green Line or "indeed on the Israeli side of the line." A British parliamentary investigative commission also called for the wall to be built on Israeli land, condemning the barrier as part of a "deliberate" Israeli "strategy of bringing the population to heel.
What this wall is really doing is taking Palestinian lands. It is also -- as the Israeli sociologist Baruch Kimmerling has described Israel's war of "politicide" against the Palestinians -- helping turn Palestinian communities into dungeons, next to which the bantust...

Passages in the Qur'an28 from Muhammad's time in Medina extol the need to follow Muhammad in spreading Islam through battle.29 English translations of several verses from the Qur'an concerning jihad are contained in Appendix A. Since the basis of Islam is the Qur'an and the Sunnah (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad's actions implementing the Qur'an),30 a study of jihad requires a brief historical view of Muhammad's actions with respect to warfare.31 Approximately two years after Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina,32 he revealed the first Qur'anic verse concerning war.\n At first glance, the UN's purpose of "self-determination of peoples"224 seems to support the notion of freedom fighters and groups rising to power within their nations.

THIS WEEK, the nation's top uniformed officers told Congress to end "don't ask, don't tell," the discriminatory policy that allows gays and lesbians to serve in the military -- so long as no one knows their sexual orientation. This policy must end.
It is disgraceful to require our service members to live a lie. They protect our American values of freedom, equality and self- determination.

The history of Haiti, especially its Revolution and enduring struggle, serves also as a model, mirror and inspiration to all those who love freedom, cherish justice, and are committed to the lived dignity, self-determination and flourishing of persons, peoples and humanity as a wholeTAt the Sixth World Social Forum in Caracas, Venezuela, January 26, 2006, President Hugo Chavez declared "We carry Africa inside us. Africa is a part of us; Latin Caribbean America cannot be understood without Africa and the sacrifice of Africa and the grandeur of Africa." Now, President Chavez did not say this simply because he and many other Latinos are Afro-Latinos and share African heritage. He was speaking of the gift of Africa's and Haiti's own liberation struggles and sacrifice, Haiti's support of Lat...

[...] in England it's called me National Institute of Comparative Effectiveness, otherwise known as NICE. [laughter] You can't make this stuff up. At the end of the day this is what I call a wholesale replacement of the American system of government, of the American ideal where we equalize opportunity for individuals, but have a limited government, a free-enterprise system, dominated by self-determination and liberty and freedom and we replace it with the European notion of equalizing the results of people's lives. A new layer of progressive policies layered on top that they're going to have to fund with much more taxes than they're even articulating right now, new benefits, mandates and entitlements, and at the end of this administration the size of our government will be appreciably...
