C. officials say they have no intention of paying a Prince George's County company that billed the District this week more than $6 million for treating indigent D.C. residents who cross into Maryland for free or low-cost medical care.
I am sure many District residents receive uncompensated care in Maryland," D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams said. "I could give you a list of thousands of Maryland people who receive uncompensated care in the District.

State Police say a Cabell County woman was both driving under the influence and sending text messages when she crashed into the side of a building in Jefferson at nearly 100 mph. Trooper M.J. Napier was on patrol about 3 a.m. Wednesday when he was notified of a vehicle crashing into an office at 6404 MacCorkle Ave. at a high rate of speed. A pair of Kanawha County paramedics were taking a break in the parking lot of Value City Furniture on U.S. 60 when they saw a Toyota Corolla traveling at a high rate of speed leave the roadway, cross a strip of grass and an open parking area and then strike a building, Napier said. The medics said it didnt appear the woman ever applied her brakes, Napier said. The trooper found the Toyota about three car lengths inside the building and the driver, ide...

In this Article I examine “medical tourism”—the travel of patients who are residents of one country to another country for medical treatment—which is fast becoming a multi-billion dollar industry. To date, the primary U.S. medical tourists appear to have been uninsured or underinsured Americans seeking substantial cost savings by traveling to less developed countries for care. More recently, state governments, self-insured firms, Fortune 500 companies, and domestic insurers have begun attempts to get their insured populations to use medical tourism as well by requiring it or giving incentives for its use (what I call “insurer-prompted medical tourism”).
There is, however, a dark side to the growth of this industry. In this Article I set out...

Martin L. Chip Doordan wants open heart surgery. Not for himself, but for his hospital, Anne Arundel Medical Center. Doordan, president of the Annapolis area health center, and his colleagues have been working for years to try to earn for the hospital the right to add open heart surgery to its list of services.Already in the midst of a $210 million expansion project that will add operating rooms, Doordan said the hospital could easily include a cardiac surgical center. But in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and 36 other states, it's not as simple as that. Health care in these regions is not a free market.Like all other hospitals in Maryland, Anne Arundel Medical Center needs permission from a state regulatory agency to add services like open heart surgery - permission it is unlikely to get any...
