In this summer's heated health care debate, two images stand out. First, at raucous town hall meetings around the country, senior citizens (and others) denounce the specter of a "government takeover" of medicine, apparently unaware that Medicare is a federal program. The second image is of thousands of Los Angeles residents waiting in line overnight for a chance to access free medical care provided by visiting volunteers, as though L.A. were some Third World country. Come on America: We can do better than this.
