  • It's no accident that the social democracies - Sweden, France and Germany, who kept on paying high wages - now have more industry than the United States or the UK. During the '70s, '80s and '90s, the Anglo-Americans, the neoliberals, The Economist crowd, and the press generally, would taunt the social democrats in Europe: "You'd better break the unions." That's the way to save your industry. Even in 2008, precisely because of "globalization," Germany had a serious shortage of people able to fill high-skill, highpaying jobs, especially engineers. In the United States, engineers complain they can't find work; many of them just end up in sales. In the union-free, lower-cost United States, we don't create the kind of jobs engineers can do. Germany's problem? It has too many such jobs. It's ...

  • [Booker T. Washington] lifted up the African-American tradition emphasizing a sound education and hard work; along with DuBois who said, "That what Anicanr Americans needed was real education that would teach them to know, to think and to aspire." They did it without guns and swastikas or questioning the birthright of the president of the United States. They never yelled, "I want my country back," as if the country has somehow disappeared. No, it did not eliminate private education! Many organizations, churches and others still maintained a private education for students in their community. • An accounting system can be defined as a combination of inputs organized into a complex whole with the purpose of providing relevant information for decision making. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the "inputs " that are involved in the accounting systems of France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom as compared with the United States. These inputs are economic, political, legal, educational, and religious factors. As each input varies from country to country, it only stands to reason that the accounting systems from country to country vary.

  • Product and waste take-back is becoming more regulated by countries to protect the environment. Such regulation puts an economic burden on firms, while creating fairness concerns and potentially even missing its primary target: environmental benefits. This research discusses the economic and environmental impacts of extended producer responsibility type of legislation and identifies efficiency conditions. It is shown that the right policy would (i) make producers responsible for their own waste to avoid fairness concerns and (ii) favor ecodesign producers to create stronger environmental benefits. Furthermore, the efficiency of take-back systems is also driven by environmental classification of products, industry structure, and end-user willingness to participate in take-back programs.

  • This study looks at factors affecting the decision of early retirement for Egyptian government sector employees. The empirical analysis is based on 2005 nationally representative sample of government sector workers. Among the findings of this study are: women are more likely to retire earlier than men; good health status is associated with longer stay on the job; the level of education is not a determining factor for women, but it is for men; men plan to work after their early retirement; the presence of the working wife has a positive effect on her husband to retire early, yet a working husband discourages his wife from retiring early. Policy implications discussed timing of the announcement of the plans; the potential outcome of excessive payouts, as well as the need for the governmen...
