  • Terry Pegula said the Buffalo Sabres would be aggressive in free agency. After they acquired the rights to Christian Ehrhoff, one of the premier defensemen remaining on the marketplace, it became obvious the owner wasn't kidding. The Sabres sent a fourth-round pick in next year's draft to the New York Islanders on Wednesday night just for the right to talk with Ehrhoff, who helped Vancouver reach the Stanley Cup finals.

  • Having reconciled the first round's impact on the rest of the postseason, we're now prepared to take a look at how the playoffs may be affecting what is perhaps the most compelling event on the NBA's 2010 calendar. That, of course, is the league's Free Agency Bonanza. With Miami's elimination already in our cross hairs, let's begin with Heat superstar Dwyane Wade, widely considered the salutato rian in this year's free-agency class. And there are several moving parts that could impact Wade's future. The first is the Heat's ability to cough up $127 million over six years to keep Dwyane; he would have to settle for a measly $98 million over five years to go elsewhere. Another variable is Pat Riley's recent threat to not rule out a return to coaching. If the Heat president returns to the b...

  • JUPITER, Fla. - What St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa described Sunday as "a spectacular distraction potentially" came into sharper focus as a source familiar with negotiations confirmed first baseman Albert Pujols recently rejected the team's offer regarding a contract extension. A week after the parties were described as "nowhere close" to an agreement, it appears increasingly likely Pujols will enter camp Wednesday morning with no deal in place. If so, talks would halt because of a Feb. 15 deadline put in place by Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano. And the likelihood of the three-time National League Most Valuable Player reaching free agency after the upcoming season would increase.

  • CHICAGO - First-year White Sox manager Robin Ventura has a wish list heading into next week's winter meetings: keep several of the key players already on Chicago's current roster. With lefty Mark Buehrle exploring free agency and starters John Danks and Gavin Floyd the subject of trade rumors along with right fielder Carlos Quentin, Ventura isn't sure what his first team will look like.

  • One factor contributing to the urgency to finish an NFL labor agreement quickly is both sides' desire for a free agent signing period long enough for teams to assemble their rosters and players to shop for suitable deals. Hundreds of NFL players who could be eligible for free agency have been in limbo for nearly 31/2 months, leaving teams unable to complete personnel acquisitions for the 2011 season. Free agent signings and trades of players have been prohibited during the lockout, which began March 12. Teams also have been barred from signing the players they drafted in April and from signing undrafted rookies.

  • NEW YORK - A rookie wage scale and free agency for veterans appear to be the biggest stumbling blocks to ending the NFL lockout. Several people with knowledge of the talks tell The Associated Press that such key issues as splitting total revenues - the major reason for the dispute - the salary cap, fewer offseason workouts and the length of a new collective bargaining agreement are close to being completed.

  • Poor Buddy Nix. The guy tells us the truth and we can't handle the truth. He says the Buffalo Bills won't be jumping into the free agent pond up to their ears and we tell him, oh, go jump off a bridge. And how is that fair? Nix didn't create this mess, he inherited this mess. He didn't trade up at great expense for J.P. Losman, didn't draft Aaron Maybin, had nothing to do with John McCargo. He resided out west when the Bills became an example of free-agency's pitfalls by spending lavishly on Langston Walker and Derrick Dockery. And yet there's an expectation he should have plugged all the leaks in the ship by now and have the Bills sailing toward playoff contention.

  • NBA NEW YORK - No free agency now, maybe no games later.

  • Bob McGinn, a Green Bay Packers beat writer for the Journal Sentinel, rates the best players among the 336 unrestricted free agents, the 95 or so players who have been released since Feb. 9 and the 44 players who didn't receive qualifying offers. The unrestricted signing period began Feb. 26 at 11:01 p.m. The nine "franchise" players weren't considered. Players are ranked in order of attractiveness based mainly on ability, production, age and health. Approximately 50 players already have signed with new teams. Another 30 or so have re-signed with their own teams.
