• Lingering Election Questions Rattle Foreign Investors

With allegations of serious fraud and the possibility of a run-off election, the troubled presidential elections in Afghanistan this summer did not give foreign investors quite the signal they were hoping for -- that the Central Asian nation was on a smoother path to democracy. S. Frederick Starr, a professor at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC, says the US government's dealings with the Afghan government will heavily influence whether US investors join the Chinese, Indian, Pakistani and South Korean companies making large-scale investments in the country's infrastructure.

OREM -- S. Frederick Starr, one of the country's leading experts on Central Asia, will be among a group of speakers on Friday at a conference at Utah Valley State College. Starr, chairman of the Central Asian Institute at John Hopkins University, will be the keynote speaker for the conference, "The U.S. Interests in Central Asia and the Future of the Countries of the Region," from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centre Stage in the Sorensen Student Center.
