Tom Plaskett who is non-executive chairman of Novell and who also serves on the board of RadioShack, both of which have had CEO transitions this year, argued that boards simply aren't spending enough time on succession. The lame duck issue is really a great point," Mader argued, "but I believe the board should embrace the philosophy that there is an effective length of time, and that should be an ongoing discussion at all times with the CEO.

Why is compensation such a difficult subject? Richard W. Gochnauer, CEO of United Stationers, a leading office-supplies wholesaler, said it is because the interests of the board, management, and shareholders aren't always aligned on the topic: "You have shareholders who want performance and you have a board that needs to protect itself. Also in the Crouse-Hinds Theatre is Syracuse Opera (47-OPERA), which features all Italian composers this season, one of whom moved to America and wrote in English. Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto (Oct. 26, 28) tells the deathless story of the hunchback jester's plot for revenge that goes bad. The work contains some of the most beloved arias in all opera, Gilda's heartfelt "Caro nome" and the Duke's declaration of cynicism, "La donna è mobile." In a deft shift to the comic, Gaetano Donizzetti's Don Pasquale (March 7, 9) deals with the humiliating romantic intrigues of a wealthy old bachelor. Company favorite Philip Cokorinos appears in the title role of this last masterwork of Bel Canto tradition. Information technology - Panel Discussion
Chief Executive magazine and A.T. Kearney sponsored a roundtable discussion of CEOs on how to measure the value of investments in information technology (IT). The issue is important because IT spending has been increasing at a rapid pace, with companies around the world spending $1 trillion in 1997. The discussion becomes more urgent when one considers that many such investments have failed. Four out of 10 major IT projects have not succeeded while three of the 10 are questioned. The participants at the discussion talked about their views on what aspect of IT investment outcome to measure. They also discussed if justification for this kind of spending is necessary. Some participants encouraged their peers to treat IT like they do marketing. Alt...
