  • LIVERMORE FALLS -- The Planning Board unanimously approved a site plan review application on Thursday for a new medical arts center to be built downtown, Code Enforcement Officer James Butler Jr. said Friday. The Franklin Community Health Network, parent board of Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, plans to build a $4 million, 13,700- square-foot center on Main Street. It would replace the vacant building connected to the Chuck Wagon Restaurant that formerly housed SAD 36/Jay Adult Education programs, and years ago a shopping mall.

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has agreed to pay two Baltimore-area hospitals almost $2.2 million to settle their claims that they were wrongfully denied Medicare reimbursement for skilled nursing services they provided during the 1996 through 1998 fiscal years. The agreement means Good Samaritan Hospital Center Inc. in Northeast Baltimore and Franklin Square Hospital Center in Essex will now be paid as if they were, in fact, new providers of skilled nursing services when they opened their respective specialized units in January 1996 and December 1995, according to their lawyer.

  • For the first time in more than 35 years, Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore County is getting a major overhaul, according to its newly approved $225 million expansion plan. The Maryland Health Care Commission, the state's hospital regulatory agency, just approved the hospital's application for a certificate of need showing that its patient population and community demanded an expansion of the aging facility.
