  • The drug testing business is booming, and local drug-screening company Conspire2Hire is set to expand into four states by year's end. Conspire2Hire, which began selling in 2010, sold its second franchise to an operator in Fort Worth, Tex., which is scheduled to open Sept. 1. The Texas drug-testing business will open in an industrial area, making it a good area for companies to access, said Lynette Crow, founder and CEO of Conspire2Hire, headquartered in Colorado Springs.

  • PORTLAND The burger joint is busy during a weekday lunch hour with steady business inside. Its one of many places to eat in the city and, more specifically, in the iconic Old Port. Five Guys Burgers and Fries recently joined a plethora of restaurants in the immediate area, from comfortable pubs like Gritty McDuffs and the Old Port Tavern to high-end restaurants like the Salt Exchange and Fore Street.

  • Mark Murphy is an educated man and a former hard-hitting NFL safety. Both conditions help the Green Bay Packers' president understand why Super Bowl XLV is unique. To me it's the two most storied franchises in the league," he said of the Packers and Steelers, who meet today at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "You look at the team with the most championships versus the team with the most Super Bowl championships. It's really something.

  • The Bible (1966): There's a huge risk of embarrassment when it comes to franchises: If there's little interest, you've essentially made a story with no end, or even a middle. In the case of John Huston's mega-ambitious project, cranking out only one film worked out fine: After all, his source was episodic. Despite being an avowed agnostic who publicly mocked the veracity of Christianity's holy book, Huston intended to film the entire Old Testament, presumably even meboring/skeezy/violent/racist/slaverypromoting bits. Alas, he only got 22 chapters into Genesis before belatedly realizing the heyday of the all-star religious epic was as dead as Abel.

  • According to a recent report by Entrepreneur magazine, six of the top 10 fastest-growing franchises for 2010 are in the commercial cleaning industry. The ranking is based on the number of units added in the U.S. and Canada over the last two years. Commercial cleaning is generally outpacing franchises in other industries, such as retail, because it is relatively inexpensive to get into, and it is somewhat recession-proof. Additionally, in the commercial cleaning industry, it is common for the franchise company to provide its franchisees with clients, giving them an immediate source of revenue.

  • Banks are still lending, but they're a lot more careful and it can be tough for franchisees that don't have a lot of experience," says [Mike Ghadia], 41, who adds that he's been involved as a franchisee since age 17, when he opened a Domino's Pizza restaurant. "The bank was very cautious with my loan, even though I have a history of doing well with my stores. Ted Morgan, a senior vice president and credit administrator with BNB Bank, notes that franchises in particular are affected [by the credit crunch] because they tend to be retail establishments, and their collateral is often limited. Loan delinquencies in general are rising, says Morgan, whose Fort Lee bank is an SBA lender, and I'd say that many banks, including SBA lenders, are reining in their activities, especially with star...

  • The trek to Super Bowl XLV is proof that the sum is much greater than its parts. All we need to do is look at one aspect of the Pittsburgh Steelers' and Green Bay Packers' respective roads to Dallas. For the Packers, it started almost four years ago, when General Manager Ted Thompson decided he had enough of veteran quarterback Brett Favre's retirement waffling. The Packers, taking Favre's retirement queue, showed him the door and welcomed the able backup Aaron Rodgers, who was chomping at the bit to get his chance to start.
