  • An alcoholic old man named Ali (Tuncel Kurtiz) is a cheerfully crass lout who bullies his sensitive son Nejat (Baki Davrak) and works out a pricey living arrangement with Nursei Kose's affectingly aging prostitute, all the while boozing and smoking his way through a massive coronary. His son, a bookish professor from a German university, naturally doesn't think much of his dad's new girlfriend. But kinship develops slowly in this patient picture. There's not really all that much wrong with The Edge of Heaven except that it feels so awfully familiar. C+ (S.B.) In Search of a Midnight Kiss, a $25,000 retro indie shot in black-and-white DV, features two lovebirds who don't, at first, seem the least bit compatible. Scott McNairy plays an unemployed L.A. transplant who's introduced to viewer...

...David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully are dragged out...

  • So I'm sorry to report that this movie isn't very good. When we do see [Fox Mulder] and [Scully] between the sheets - not quite a spoiler, as their relationship was strongly implied by the end of the series - it's about as sexy as watching your parents' long-married friends in a post-coital moment. That's not because the two stars are "old"; it's because they've done this dance too many times before. They could sleepwalk through these roles, and director/co-writer Chris Carter doesn't give them much else to do. More importantly, that sexual tension thing aside, the characters don't seem to have, well, changed. Scully's desire to renew her faith so she can help a young patient is touching. But when she asks Mulder not to make her "look into the darkness" anymore, her concern seems a bit ...

The latest offering from super-producer Judd Apatow's inexhaustible factory is a surprisingly earnest attempt to recreate the bantering car-chase buddy comedy of days gone by. Beat for beat and nearly scene for scene, Pineapple Expr...

...David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully are dragged out...

  • With disaster movies hitting theatres at least once a year, it comes as no surprise that director/producer Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day") was given another chance to reach box office exceptionality with disaster film "The Day After Tomorrow," a movie about the second coming of the Ice Age. In "The Day After Tomorrow" paleoclimatologist Jack Hall tries to warn the government that an abrupt shift in climate is going to cause devastating changes in the weather across the world; something that hasn't happened in over 100,000 years. It's like the millions of times in the "X-Files" when Dana Scully questions Fox Mulder's ideas no matter how many UFOs and Chupacabras she sees. "Mulder, there are no well-documented cases on this subject. This is impossible!" Oh, Scully...when will you eve...

  • New Brad Pitt is beefy: a square head on a rectangular body. Old Brad--washboard abs, the Brad of Thelma and Louise and True Romance--looked more like Orlando Bloom, this season's favorite wispy pretty boy. Bloom, in turn, seems nothing like the macho warrior he's supposed to be in the wannabe epic Kingdom of Heaven (Oct. 11), a movie not unlike Pitt's own Troy. Spin out the parallels between them all you want, but stop (at least for now) with Pitt's hot-lipped, serial-adopting, are-they-or-aren't-they co-star in the made-in-tabloid-heaven Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Nov. 29). Who does it for you? Icy, professional Nicole Kidman as a U.N. translator saving the world opposite what's-he-doing-here Sean Penn in the impersonally efficient action flick The Interpreter (Oct. 4)? Or sexy, frisky Nicol...

...David vs. David. You know him as Fox Mulder, the cynical yet ardent FBI agent who hunted down ...

  • As "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" opens, the series' characters have reached their logical endpoints. After leaving the FBI, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) soldiers on as an M.D. in a Catholic hospital, railing against the bureaucracy therein. Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), meanwhile, lives a solitary life as a bearded hermit in the woods, whiling away the days cutting out newspaper clippings. I'd say nothing has changed, but I can't quite remember how the television series ended; after chugging along admirably for most of the 1990s, the cult classic hit an abrupt wall in 2000. Mr. Duchovny left the show, Miss Anderson had one foot out the door, and the creators seemed to lose interest. In 2002 it went off the air and then, for six years, there was nothing.
