Men poured molten metal into sand casts at Waterville Iron Works - perched on the banks of the Kennebec River - in the 1800s and early 1900s. They manufactured gears, parts for stoves, plows and domestic ironware. Today, the foundry is gone, but a collection of the equipment the men used was saved. And thanks to Maine artists, these pieces have taken on new life. The wooden foundry patterns can be seen at Waterfall Arts in Belfast through March 31. They've been painted, burned, nailed, carved and shredded to become art.
Former St. Louis Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny will be in town to speak next month. Now a motivational speaker, Matheny is scheduled to speak before members of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce and others during the chamber's general membership luncheon meeting on Sept. 21 at the Foundry Art Centre. The popular ex-Cardinal is "really getting into the public arena," said Carol Felzien, director of communications for the city. The Foundry is giving him an opportunity to hone those skills and in return he is waiving his speaking fee for his talk on "Competing for an Edge," she said. Also, the city will tape his appearance and provide him with a copy of the tape that he can use for promotional purposes, she added.

The long-delayed clearing of the abandoned Dussault Foundry site at the foot of Washburn Street is finally under way, and Common Council President Richelle J. Pasceri said Thursday that the city expects to put the property up for sale by next spring. Dussault, which has been abandoned since 1995, was an iron foundry dating back to 1915. Niagara County has used funds from the Environmental Protection Agency since 2000 to assess contamination at the site and begin cleaning it up.
