The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary security zone on the waters of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during 2012 Fleet Week. 2012 Fleet Week will take place from Wednesday, April 25, 2012 through Monday, April 30, 2012. The security zone will encompass the main shipping channel into Port Everglades Harbor and the Intracoastal Waterway through Port Everglades Harbor. The security zone will be enforced while U.S. Navy vessels participating in 2012 Fleet Week transit into and out of Port Everglades. The security zone is necessary to ensure the safety and security of U.S. Navy vessels, the public, and surrounding waterway from terrorist acts, sabotage or other subversive acts, accidents, or other causes of a similar nature. The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the Lauderdale Air Show. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012 and Sunday, April 29, 2012. The safety zone is necessary for the safety of air show participants, participant aircraft, spectators, and the general public during the event. Persons and vessels are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within the safety zone unless authorized by the Captain of the Port Miami or a designated representative.

The Coast Guard is establishing special local regulations on the waters of the New River and the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade on Saturday, December 10, 2011. The marine parade will consist of approximately 120 vessels. The marine parade will begin at Cooley's Landing Marina and end at Lake Santa Barbara. From Cooley's Landing Marina, the marine parade will transit east on the New River, then head north on the Intracoastal Waterway to Lake Santa Barbara. These special local regulations are necessary to provide for the safety of life on navigable waters during the marine parade. The Coast Guard is establishing special local regulations on the waters of the New River between the Esplanade Park and slightly east of the South Andrews Avenue Bascule Bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the Red Bull Candola rowing event. The event is scheduled to take place on April 14, 2012. The temporary special local regulation is necessary for the safety of the event participants, participant vessels, and the general public during the event. Persons and vessels are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within the regulated area unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port Miami or a designated representative.

The Commander, Seventh Coast Guard District, has issued temporary deviations from the regulations governing the operation of the following two bridges that span across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida: The East Sunrise Boulevard (SR 838) Bridge, mile 1062.6; and the East Las Olas Bridge, mile 1064. The deviations are necessary due to the high volume of vessel and vehicle traffic anticipated during the Lauderdale Air Show. With the exception of opening for passage of public vessels of the United States, vessels in distress, and tugs with tows, the bridges will not open in the evening during during the Lauderdale Air Show.

In District II there are more than seven people, including one African American, Les Hollingsworth, running for the seat vacated by Commissioner Dean Trantalis, who served only one term. Incumbents, District IV's Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson have two opponents and District Ill's Commissioner Carlton Moore has one opponent, Kelvin Haynes, who seems to be missing in action. He didn't attend the candidate forum nor is his name listed on the Fort Lauderdale City Clerk's list of candidates for the February primary.

Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Carlton Moore requested verification of last week's vote from City Attorney Harry Stewart. Although Fort Lauderdale adopted resolutions in January and June to request transfer of the road from Broward and support the desires of the community, according to Stewart, "The City's position regarding the transfer of jurisdiction of Sistrunk Boulevard to the City, has been weakened by the actions taken by the City Commission. The failure of this resolution to pass means the city is not at this time, willing to ask Broward County to transfer jurisdiction again.
