The state Board of Education granted the city of Bridgeport a three-week extension to explain why it spent $2 million less than it should have on schools last year, and heard a student-designed model for the High School of the Future. Education Commissioner Betty J. Sternberg recommended that Bridgeport should forfeit the amount unless its public school system increases its minimum spending by the $4 million. She based that recommendation on the state-mandated penalty for cities and towns that fail to make minimum expenditures on schools, an amount set by state formulas.
The penalty requires the city in question to forfeit double the shortfall, meaning that Bridgeport would forfeit $4 million in 2007 from the state Education Cost Sharing Grant.
