For several dozen families, a group of cabins in the middle of a national forest represents a chance to escape modern life.
For the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the cabins impinge on the natural environment along Trapper Creek. The forest is proposing to renew the cabins' 20-year special-use permits, but first it will require the cabin owners to undertake or - at least accommodate - various improvements to stream habitat.

TUCSON, Ariz. - One of the largest wildfires in Arizona's history cast an orange glow over people fleeing their mountain homes as four cabins burned and smoke grayed the sky 200 miles away. Dozens of other fires blazed in several Western states.
The U.S. Forest Service said Friday that four summer rental cabins burned in the Wallow wildfire, which was consuming dead and dry trees and brush in the White Mountains near the New Mexico border.

Angeles National Forest officials plan to use a never-before- tried lottery system to determine which cabin owners will be allowed to rebuild among those who lost their homes in the 2002 Curve and Williams fires.
Dozens of cabin owners will place their names into a hat, and 10 of them will be allowed to erect cabins on lots predetermined by the U.S. Forest Service.

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST -- The U.S. Forest Service will have an armada of firefighting equipment on alert today when about 15 Millard Canyon cabin owners will be allowed in to an area of the Angeles National Forest closed due to extreme fire danger, officials said.
The cabin owners were given special access permits allowing them to return to their cabins to retrieve belongings and do fire clearance, Sherry Rollman, a Forest Service spokeswoman, said.

The Sipapu ski area is open ... for disc golf, that is. If you don't know about this sport, think of regular golf but without all the expensive equipment, and it's a lot easier to learn. Players hurl frisbee-like discs at metal baskets trying to make birdies and pars - and trying not to lose their discs in the creek, trees and other disc-consuming hazards. OK, so it can be almost as frustrating as real golf, but your chances of seeing any old men in plaid pants are considerably lower. One of the nicest disc-golf courses anywhere is less than two hours from Santa Fe on the Carson National Forest at the Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort. Most courses you'll come across are at municipal parks where the terrain is relatively flat and not too interesting. The 20-hole course at Sipapu...

How long has it been since you called your sleeping bag a bedroll? Or since you referred to your hightech insulating layer of clothing as long johns?
You might have a hankering to pull out the old-time language if you stay in one of several historic cabins that have been restored by the U.S. Forest Service in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests.

This is the second part of Tom Atchley's column about Garrett Huizing, one of Redlands' most prolific builders from 1904 to 1935.
After the completion of the Eureka Street subdivision in 1911, Huizing purchased the south side of Linda Place and constructed houses at 515, 519, 603, 607, 611, 615, 619, 623 and 627. The craftsman cottages and bungalows on Linda Place were built for moderate incomes and sold for $1,500 to $1,900.
