S&P Equity Research says producers have taken aggressive steps to optimize output on both a temporary and permanent basis, and it thinks these moves will allow prices to remain at elevated levels.

WASHINGTON, May 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Two global conservation groups and the U.S. forest products industry have formed a unique partnership to help the tsunami-stricken people of Indonesia rebuild their lives without destroying the already threatened tropical forests of Sumatra.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the American Forest & Paper Association, World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International, the partnership will seek donations of U.S. timber to be shipped to Indonesia's Aceh province for use in temporary shelter and in reconstructing homes, schools, hospitals and businesses in the devastated region.

In an online interview published this week, environmentalist Roxanne Quimby called Maine "a welfare state" that has a large population of obese and elderly people and whose major landowners are committed to a forest products industry model that hasn't worked in years.
Describing forest products landowners as "a very tight-knit group of industry people who own, manage and call the shots over ten million acres of land," Quimby said they have aggressively harvested trees over the last 100 years "to the point where the mills in the area have been unable to stay competitive.
