TORONTO (Reuters) - Shares of Sino-Forest jumped 23 percent on Wednesday [June 8], lifted by speculative buying and short-covering in the wake of a short-seller's damning report that has already crushed the Chinese forest plantation company's stock. Hong Kong-basedin a report that Sino Forest has fraudulently exaggerated the size of its forestry assets. Even with Wednesday's rebound, shares of the Toronto-listed company are down more than 70 percent since Muddy Waters published its allegations last Thursday [June 2].

FOREST, Va. - Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest plantation retreat has unveiled its $6 million, 20-year architectural restoration to the third president's original vision as a private place to read, think and spend time with his grandchildren after he retired. The octagon-shaped neoclasssical home painstakingly designed by Jefferson had been converted to a typical farmhouse some years after Jefferson's grandson sold it in 1828. Now visitors can view it as Jefferson did when he began his sojourns there 200 years ago, after the end of his two-term presidency, visits that would continue until 1823.
The Year Around Garden Club of Whittier has bought eight Penny Pines Plantations in the Angeles Oaks area this past year to support the Penny Pines program of the U.S. Forest Service. This program provides a plantation of 350 seedlings which are planted and maintained by forest service volunteers under the U.S. Forest Service Reforestation Program.
The watchtower on top of Bigelow Mountain, now owned by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Land, was burned Friday, April 15, according to Mark Russo with the Maine Forest Service Fire Control based in Farmington. To longtime Maine Forest Service employees Duluth Wing of Eustis, who retired in 1984 after 38 years of service as a district forest ranger, and Franklin Sargent of Highland Plantation, who retired in 1988, it was not a happy day to learn that the watchtower where they had spent so many years had been burned.
