The recently announced the addition of Dr. Dmitry Byk to its staff. He previously served as a staff psychiatrist and assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati's University Hospital. He received his doctorate from St. George's University School of Medicine in June, 2002; and did his psychiatric residency at East Carolina University. In addition, he has forensic psychiatry training from the University of Cincinnati, being used as an expert witness in criminal trials.

Dr. Elena Carmen Nichita has joined the Medical College of Georgia Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior as a faculty member. She was previously employed by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. Her area of expertise is forensic psychiatry with a focus on civil and criminal proceedings.

Forensic psychiatry isn't for everyone, and with just 41 fellowship programs in the country, it isn't a profession open to many. Dr. Nichita, 34, has returned to the Medical College of Georgia to teach, perform forensic evaluations, see patients and set up a forensic psychiatry fellowship at MCG.

The competence of criminal clients to join their attorneys in making decisions about their cases is important whether or not these come to trial. Research indicates that attorneys' paternalism explains much of their trial behavior and decisions about client competence. The findings of a study at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry suggest that competence in criminal trials should be more carefully evaluated and that some solution such as surrogate decisionmaking should be found for defendants who cannot stand trial.
