• Importer Recalls 255,000 Chinese-Made Tires

NEWARK, N.J. -- A tire importer said Thursday it would recall 255,000 Chinese-made tires it claims were defective because they lack a safety feature that prevents tread separation. The recall involves half the number of tires that the importer, Foreign Tire Sales Inc., had identified in June as possibly posing a risk.

Federal safely officials last week ordered a Union Township tire importer to recall 450,000 allegedly defective Chinese tires. The importer, Foreign Tire Sales Inc. (FTS), reportedly told federal officials that the tires lacked a critical component and may fall apart on the road at highway speeds. The tire scandal comes barely four months after another Chinese import scandal that caused Canadian pet food maker Menu Foods to recall all its products.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A New Jersey importer issued a recall yesterday of Chinese-made tires that might have been manufactured with a faulty or missing safety feature that could make them a road hazard. The models were made by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd., that country's second-largest tire manufacturer, which also makes products for such well-known U.S. brand names as Goodyear and Cooper. The importer - Foreign Tire Sales - said 250,000 steel- belted radials designed for SUVs, small pickups and vans were affected.
