RUMFORD -- Mountain Valley High School is hosting five foreign exchange students this year, providing an environment for education and cross cultural experiences, and some surprises.
Panaramol Heammaphun, whose nickname is "Prim," said she had watched many American movies in her native Thailand and had certain expectations about the United States that haven't been borne out since her arrival this fall.

The number of international students pursuing secondary education at United States (U.S.) universities has been increasing over the past 25 years, and is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. However, these students have a plethora of choices among universities in the U.S. and foreign countries. Universities must distinguish themselves if they hope to obtain the most desirable students from around the world. Previous research by Agarwal and Winkler (1985), Lee and Tan (1984), Mazzarol and Soutar (2002), and McMahon (1992) has identified a number of factors that influence the choice of educational programs. This paper builds on existing research by re-examining some of those factors combined with additional factors and by examining the role of accreditation by The Association...

We are told we don't have enough physicians to provide medical care for all Americans, so let's not pass universal health care. The same sources also tell us that uninsured Americans are not being denied health care, demonstrating once again the capacity of the political mind to hold tightly to two contradictory thoughts.
At first glance, one would think determining the correct number of physicians in particular and the number of health care personnel in general should not be a problem. But it is. My engagement with health issues for more than 40 years has increased my wariness of central planning and professions that can expand the task to fill the time.

WASHINGTON, April 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A new national poll by Harvard University's Institute of Politics (IOP) finds seven out of ten of America's college students are concerned Social Security will not pay out benefits when they retire, with students significantly more likely to support investment of Social Security taxes in private accounts than the general public. In addition, the poll showed college students at odds with the current administration on foreign policy issues, with only about one out of three in favor of the United States' work to spread freedom and democracy across the world and nearly three out of four believing the U.S. should let the U.N. and other countries take the lead in solving international crises and conflicts.
The poll also includes the second edition of t...

JACKSON, Miss. - The State Department put a freeze Monday on expansion of a program that lines up summer jobs in the U.S. for foreign college students, citing persistent complaints about young people getting ripped off and exploited.
At issue is the J-1 visa program, which began in 1963 as a way to encourage cultural understanding by allowing young adults from other countries to spend their summers living, working and traveling in the U.S.

Home-Grown Products Many of those applying for H-1B visas were in fact previously educated in the U.S. In 2007, the number of foreign students pursuing higher education degrees in the U.S. increased by three percent to 582,984 (Institute of International Education 2008), many more than the H-1B program presently accomodates, if all such foreign students intended to remain here. Beginning in the middle of the twentieth century, highly educated individuals facing persecution or lack of opportunity at home poured into the U.S. The reverse is now true as other countries are capitalizing on the economic benefits brought about by opening-up their labor in-flow policies and are soliciting more skilled immigrants into their economies.

Today, thanks to globalization and international integration, more and more students from all over the world come to the US to study. The majority of international students are considered to be nonresident aliens under the US Internal Revenue Code. There are many differences between the US income tax system and the systems of other countries. It can be quite a burdensome process for international students to fill out all the necessary forms and statements that accompany the filing of US income tax returns. Tax preparers should familiarize themselves with the current tax requirements and compliance rules for federal income tax reporting with respect to foreign students attending US colleges and universities. In most cases, a nonresident alien is taxed only on US-source income. All intern...
