[...] though, let me say that while the ideas that shape our foreign policy are critically important, this, for me, is not simply an intellectual exercise. I have met parents struggling to keep their jobs, pay their mortgages, cover their children's college tuitions, and afford healthcare. [...] all that I have done and seen has convinced me that our foreign policy must produce results for people -the laid-off auto worker in Detroit whose future will depend on global economic recovery, the farmer or small business owner in the developing world whose lack of opportunity can drive political instability and economic stagnation, the families whose loved ones are risking their lives for our country in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere, children in every land who deserve a brighter future.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Foreign policy experts at Brookings and the Atlantic Council noted encouraging signs in changes sweeping North Africa and the Middle East, most notably reforms and elections in Morocco and Tunisia. But they also warned of looming threats from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), now strengthened by a flood of Libyan weapons and ties with other militant groups in the region, including the Polisario Front, whose members last month reportedly helped AQIM kidnap Western aid workers from a Polisario refugee camp in Algeria. Their U.S. physician, Joseph Agris M.D., and documentary film producer Don North will accompany them.
When the war on terrorism began, the task seemed straightforward - deter, disrupt and destroy the terrorist network threatening the United States. Through the years, however, as our awareness of the nature of the threat has grown, our strategies have not kept pace. Today, there are significant gaps in American counterterrorism strategy, a problem that my colleague, Ilan Berman, seeks to address in his new book "Winning the Long War. Mr. Berman, vice president for policy at the American Foreign Policy Council, has written a compact, swift-moving book in which he seeks to set the agenda for future strategic frameworks that will better address both the root causes of Islamic radicalism and the ongoing struggles we face with its most dogmatic and violent adherents.
