COMPETING for foreign direct investments (FDIs) is a very tough business. At best, Malaysia is trying to catch up and to put itself on par in competing for FDI inflows compared to neighbouring countries. For the period between 2000 and 2008, the average annual increase of FDI inflows for Malaysia was only 4% compared to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam whose performance was in the region of 15% to 25%.
On a positive note, spillover from FDI inflows will increase expatriate population, generate more demand for housing, office and retail space (in terms of sales and rentals), and higher-value employment opportunities.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Commission or CFTC) is issuing final rules to implement new statutory provisions enacted by Title VII of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Dodd-Frank Act). On November 19, 2010, the Commission requested comment on proposed rules that would establish a registration requirement that applies to foreign boards of trade (FBOT) that wish to provide their identified members or other participants located in the United States with direct access to their electronic trading and order matching systems. After reviewing the comments submitted in response to the proposed rules, the Commission has determined to issue these final FBOT registration rules substantially as originally proposed, with certain modifications.

SUCH a bearish view, however, is not an indication that the local property mart is on the verge of collapsing, as evident during the 1997/1998 Asian financial crisis.
He writing is on the wall. Even the most bullish industry experts would vouch that it would be near impossible for the Malaysian property market to escape unscathed at a time when real estate prices across the globe - notably London, Hong Kong and Singapore - had fallen as much as 45% across the board.

TAKING shape down south of Peninsular Malaysia is an exciting, world-class metropolis that will bring far-reaching changes to how we live, work and play. A long-term development on the fast track, Iskandar Malaysia is a showpiece of the country's evolving social and economic development for making the transition to developed nation status a decade from now.
One of the earliest economic growth corridors to be established, Iskandar Malaysia was launched in 2006, driven largely by the government's investment arm, Khazanah Nasional Bhd. Located in Johor - the southern gateway to Peninsular Malaysia - the mammoth project sprawls over 2,217 sq km (550,000 acres), a size three times bigger than Singapore.

By many people's reckoning, including the experts, Malaysia already has an excellent healthcare system in place. Is there a need to reform it?
WITH ITS HIGHLY ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE primary system, Malaysia boasts of having one of the region's most advanced healthcare systems. The country's standard of healthcare frequently receives praise from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international agencies. About 90% of the population live within five kilometres of a static health facility. In addition, there are outreach services by the government's rural health team - mobile units reaching out to the people in the deeper rural areas via four- wheel-drives, boats and helicopters.
