The other day, Gazette readers got a glimpse of the extent of foreign investments in this country. It came from a front-page Associated Press story inspired by the ruckus over the deal for an Arab company to buy U.S. port operations.
Total foreign investments amounted to more than a $1 trillion in factories and office buildings in 2004, up more than 8 percent from the year before, according to the article. Most came from European investors and were spread over West Virginia and every other state in the union.
