To the Editor: Cutting the budget is essential if we are to prevent an economic collapse. But, where do we cut spending? How about stopping foreign aid?
Cuts to U.S. foreign aid budget will be life-threatening to the world's poorest children in Horn of Africa and elsewhere WASHINGTON, July 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the clock winds down on Capitol Hill's current budget battle and the August 2 deadline to extend the national debt limit looms, recent polls show that Americans remain divided on the issue of foreign aid. According to a Gallup poll from January, 59% of those polled supported cutting foreign aid.
WASHINGTON , Nov. 29, 2011 / PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the end of year approaches, public interest in the drought and famine in East Africa has waned, but the suffering has not. USAID has reported that less than half of all Americans are aware of this crisis, which has affected 13 million people and pushed 250,000 to the brink of death. Various NGOs and governments are sending aid, and efforts have been made to coordinate efforts, but delivery is still difficult. NGOs have expressed deepening concern about adequacy of future aid due to potential cuts to the congressional foreign aid budget.
WASHINGTON - A Senate panel expressed its outrage Thursday over Pakistan's conviction of a doctor who helped the United States track down Osama bin Laden, voting to cut aid to Islamabad by $33 million - $1 million for every year of the physician's 33-year sentence for high treason. The punitive move came on top of deep reductions the Appropriations Committee already had made to President Barack Obama's budget request for Pakistan, a reflection of the growing congressional anger over its cooperation in combating terrorism. The overall foreign aid budget for next year had slashed more than half of the proposed assistance and threatened further reductions if Islamabad failed to open overland supply routes to U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
FIFTY YEARS ago, almost 20 million children under the age of 5 died every year. In 2010, the figure was down to 7.6 million. This 60 percent decline in childhood deaths - reflecting advances in agriculture, education, health and sanitation - is compelling evidence of the increasing justice in our world. But the global economic crisis is putting the long-term trend of progress at risk, as Congress' debates about the foreign-aid budget underscore.
Seeking to shut off federal aid going to foreign countries that "don't like us," a Texas Republican congressman said Wednesday that lawmakers should vote separately on funding for every foreign nation receiving taxpayer money. With foreign aid a major sticking point in the budget battles raging on Capitol Hill, Rep. Ted Poe proposed new House rules to hold country-by-country votes, saying it would end the current system where overall foreign aid levels are decided essentially in one fell swoop. He said splitting each country's funding into its own bill will make members of Congress think more carefully about which countries deserve money, while adding transparency and accountability to the process.
With all of the known and unknown global graft by foreign leaders, it is time for the United States to adopt a strict "Made in the USA" policy. Since foreign aid (global welfare) will never be abolished by our gutless politicians, our taxpayers' dollars should be limited to providing only "Made in the USA" products and services. The foreign aid budget dollar values should be identified as "vouchers" or "credits" good for "Made in the USA" entities.
Fortunately, Americans don't need [Barack Obama] to "speculate" on what former President Jimmy Carter already confirmed on May 25, 2008: Israel possesses an arsenal of at least 150 nuclear weapons. Why does Obama trot out the discredited policy of "strategic ambiguity"- in which Israeli and VS. officials officially refuse to confirm or deny the existence Israeli nuclear weapons - at this early moment? For one reason alone: to break the law. The 1976 Symington Amendment prohibits most U. S. foreign aid to any country found trafficking in nuclear enrichment equipment or technology outside international safeguards. Israel has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proiiferation Treaty (NPT). If US. presidents complied with the Symington Amendment, they would not deliver yearly aid packages to Israel...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This morning Mandy Moore and Barbara P. Bush will join high-level officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to discuss how less than one percent of the federal budget is saving lives, developing new markets for U.S. products and protecting our borders from infectious disease. A recent poll by Kaiser Family Foundation showed that most Americans believed U.S. investment in foreign aid to be twenty-five percent of the federal budget, when the accurate figure is less than one percent
It is official now. The Ron Paul campaign, despite surging in the Iowa polls, is not worthy of serious consideration. According to a New York Times editorial, "Ron Paul long ago disqualified himself for the presidency by peddling claptrap proposals like abolishing the Federal Reserve, returning to the gold standard, cutting a third of the federal budget and all foreign aid and opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That last item, along with the decade-old racist comments in the newsletters Paul published, is certainly worthy of criticism. But not as an alternative to seriously engaging the substance of Paul's current campaign - his devastating critique of crony capitalism and his equally trenchant challenge to imperial wars and the assault on our civil liberties that they engender.
