  • NAIROBI, Kenya - Somali pirates have released a Greek-owned ship and its 21 crew members, including 14 Filipinos, after more than a month in captivity, the Philippine government and the ship's owner said Friday. The embassy of the Philippines in Nairobi reported that the MV Delvina was heading to Mombasa with its crew, who were safe and in good health. Foreign Affairs spokesman Ed Malaya said the ship, seized on Nov. 5, was released around 2 a.m. Friday (1 p.m. EST Thursday, 1800 GMT Thursday).

  • In Parliament last week, Karl Samuda, the JLP's foreign affairs spokesman, criticised [Hugo Chavez]'s "socialism" and questioned whether Venezuela would use the Security Council seat "to further its undeniable anti-American agenda". Samuda's remarks followed the warning by his party boss, Bruce Golding, a week earlier that "we must not sell out our foreign policy for a few barrels of oil". The Jamaica Labour Party's lack of sophistication in foreign policy issues showed glaringly in the Samuda presentation, as he took that party's hysterical anti-socialist stance to embarrassing proportions," wrote [Ian Boyne], who made it clear that he is no supporter of Chavez but respected Jamaica's capacity to fashion sophisticated foreign policy.

  • The worries arise mainly from the standoff between Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe and Botswana's President Ian Khama, the only SADC leader to publicly reject Mugabe's disputed re-election last year. Millions of Zimbabweans live illegally in Botswana. Hundreds are deported every week, and violent crime linked to Zimbabweans has increased across the country. Mugabe conveyed the message to Khama that they should stop criticising each other in public. He said it was incumbent on him and Khama to preserve the "very good" relations between the two countries, Khama's father was a family friend and there was no need for him to attack Mugabe in public. According to foreign affairs spokesman Thembela Ngculu, ministers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Seychelles arrived early yesterda...

  • THE LATEST nuclear spat reflects badly on everyone involved. Labour closed the country's 47th parliamentary term this week with a shrill -- but recycled -- denunciation of National's muddled handling on nuclear-powered ships and, by inference, nuclear- powered electricity. The major Opposition party has since distilled its thinking, on ships at least, into "No change without a nation- wide referendum", but a year and a half ago the position was not quite so clear. In January 2004, National leader Don Brash, foreign affairs spokesman Lockwood Smith, and various party and Ministry of Foreign Affairs personnel met visiting United States politicians and diplomats. It was there that the newly promoted Dr Brash made, or didn't, his fabled "gone by lunchtime" comment about the ban, which effec...

  • The WikiLeak dump of U.S. embassy cables was a reckless act. It is a far cry from the responsible reporting on foreign affairs with which I am familiar. When I was the State Department spokesman in the Reagan administration, Bernard Kalb, then diplomatic correspondent for NBC, called me about a tip that the bad guys in Beirut had captured and were holding an American CIA officer.

  • Mohamed ElBaradei, hawk: That's the novel line Iran is peddling about the International Atomic Energy Agency chief in the wake of his receipt of the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. "The pessimistic hypothesis is that with this prize, Mr. ElBaradei will become closer to the political position of the United States and the Europeans, especially on the nuclear issue," Iranian parliamentary foreign- affairs spokesman Kazem Jalali put it to Agence-France Press last week. "And he will put more pressure on Iran. If only it were true. Actually, Mr. ElBaradei is a dove and technocrat who gives the Iranians considerable leeway to pursue their nuclear ambitions. The agency he heads is a flat-footed bureaucracy that gets caught by surprise every time Iran, North Korea or some other would-be nuclear power m...

  • South Africa was suspended from for many years over apartheid. Fiji is now suspended after its military coup last year. In the face of continued suspension and mounting criticism of President Robert Mugabe's autocratic rule, Zimbabwe withdrew from in 2003. There is a wealth of technical co-operation around the transfer of technology and collaborative research and development, as The Gleaner-reported comment by the Opposition Spokesman on Foreign Affairs underscores. Karl Samuda says the country can benefit form the exchange of ideas and technology within . And Jamaica does not have to be only mendicant recipient. "Each of us is willing to share the developments which take place within [our] respective countries," Samuda says.
