  • On June 10, MacDonald pulled a stunning reversal amid derogatory comments from Harper's cabinet, claiming that federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is "undermining negotiations with his province," and that he, MacDonald, as a result, would not continue in an arbitration process. Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay, a Nova Scotian and the Senior Minister for Atlantic Canada, allegedly was asked by the Prime Minister's communications director to sign a letter that rejected any side deals with Nova Scotia.

  • A Canadian study of the anticipated effects of liquefied natural gas terminals on Passamaquoddy Bay cites risks of navigation in narrow Harbour Head Passage and acknowledges the possibility of easing those risks, although it could spur additional costs. • According to the decision, [Ali Tahmourpour] was taunted because of his ethnicity and religion, ridiculed for wearing a Muslim medal and for signing his name in Kurdish. The Tribunal awarded him half a million dollars and ordered the RCMP to take measures toward greater inclusiveness. Minorities must, it said, be made to feel welcome. • Speaking for Canada's Conservative minority government, Peter Kent, Canada's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Americas), has put full blame for the Gaza tragedy at the feet of Hamas. Siding unconditionally with Israel, he stated: A thousand people gathered in a Montreal synagogue on January 9 to support Israel, but 15 Jews demonstrated outside. One of them, Aaron Lakoff, told the media, "We're here to denounce the massacre." The day before, 4,000 attended a rally to support Israel in Toronto, again with a smaller group of opponents demonstrating outside.
