People change their identities for many reasons. They don't like their name, they're on the lam from the law, or they simply want a new start.It happens with automobiles, too. Case in point: the 2008 Ford Taurus, which falls into the category of wanting a new start. From the mid-1980s until just recently, the Ford Taurus was one of the best-selling cars in the country. But it fell victim to neglect as Ford concentrated its profit-making efforts on trucks and SUVs. Taurus sputtered and stalled, and was easily passed by the two most popular mid-sized cars, Toyota's Camry and Honda's Accord. In its last years, it was ignominiously relegated to rental companies and other penny-pinching fleets.

First and most important, the old Taurus was a mid-size car, and the new Taurus is a large car. Compared to the old Taurus, the new Taurus is much larger and more comfortable sedan with a much better chassis and much larger trunk, and it has a much bigger engine and better transmission, all of which comes at a much different price point. Based on interior volume and trunk volume, the new Taurus is even larger than the Ford Crown Victoria.

Ford Motor Co. is revamping its Ford Taurus sedan with three new, fuel-efficient engine choices and a hands-free system that automatically parks the car. The 2013 Taurus debuted Wednesday at the New York Auto Show and will go on sale next spring.
