In 2.5L form, the Duratec made Ward's 10 Best Engines list four times in the 1990s. The 3.0L form was introduced in 1996. It is made at Ford's Cleveland Engine Plant. The 3.0L version powered the Lincoln LS, Jaguar S-TYPE, Mazda 6 and-more recently-the Five Hundred. The 2.5L and 3.OL engines are in Ford's Mondeo family, making their debut on the 1994 Ford Mondeo (European). The Duratec 35 (3.5L) and Duratec 30 (3.0L) have exactly the same exterior dimensions.

Question: We recently vacationed in Italy. We had reserved a small Fiat wagon but were upgraded to a Ford Mondeo diesel wagon with a six-speed manual tranny. While I'm not a fan of station wagons, this one was a pleasure to drive. The diesel was much quieter than I expected and delivered all the power you'd want. And we averaged 38-plus mpg on two tanks of fuel.
So the question is: Why doesn't Ford (and other car companies) offer this kind of drivetrain in their small to midsize U.S. models? -- Larry
