NOW that the tabloid feeding frenzy has abated somewhat, it's time for a cooler look at the furor over former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's fathering a child by one of his household workers.
A few pundits have tried to make the connection between his marital betrayal and his failings as governor, but one has nothing to do with the other.

WOODLAND HILLS - As he launched a radio ad campaign Tuesday for his budget measures on the May 19 ballot, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said failure to approve the package would worsen the state's already- dire fiscal crisis.
If they don't pass, we will be facing a $50 billion problem," Schwarzenegger said at a meeting with Daily News editors and reporters. "It will mean massive cuts in education, hospitals, prisons. These are things people don't want to see cut.

WASHINGTON -- If John McCain becomes president, he will be confronted by a Congress with significantly larger Democratic majorities than today's -- majorities furious about high hopes dashed by an eighth Republican victory in 11 presidential elections. And if the normal pattern of off-year elections obtains in 2010, those majorities will expand. So McCain would have to deal with a hostile legislature for four years, as Arnold Schwarzenegger has done for almost five years. For that reason, and because these two self-styled post-partisan, reach-across-the-aisle mavericks admire one another -- McCain has given Schwarzenegger a starring role Monday at the Republican convention -- it is pertinent to survey Schwarzenegger's governorship of one-eighth of America's population.

LOS ANGELES - It was a storybook marriage in 1986 on a spring weekend on Cape Cod that united a princess of an American political dynasty, Maria Shriver, and the gap-toothed muscle-clad movie star famous enough to be known by one name, Arnold.
In many ways, it was a pairing of opposites: Her uncle was a U.S. president; his father was an Austrian policeman. She was the rising star of a network TV news show; he was the pot-puffing star of "Pumping Iron." He was a Republican with a soft spot for Richard Nixon; her family was a pillar in the nation's Democratic establishment.

There were a lot of questionable actions and policies during the seven years Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor of California. All the suspicions about one of the last of those acts have now been confirmed by the man who once gleefully adopted the sobriquet "governator.
This move came only moments before Schwarzenegger was termed out of office, departing with a legacy of failure in his avowed aims of restoring both fiscal integrity and public faith in state government.

After reviewing the written material from both sides, [Schwarzenegger] has agreed to a private clemency hearing on December 8, five days before the pending execution. He will likely hear comprehensive testimony from prosecutors and defense attorneys as well as the deceased victim's family members, who reportedly do not favor clemency.
These accomplishments must be considered in the context of Williams' early association with 'gangs,' as they are known in today's society. With all of the good things [Williams] has done, he has refused to 'snitch' on his fellow gang members, remaining true to his sect and denying law enforcement officials any information that may be useful in solving other alleged gang related crimes or identifying other suspects.

SAN FRANCISCO - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown filed motions Friday calling for resumption of same-sex weddings in the state.
The officials filed the motions after U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker previously overturned Proposition 8, California's voter- approved gay marriage ban.

There has rarely been a governor more deserving of being thrown from office in a recall than Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's broken almost every promise he ever made; he's demonstrated steadfast ineptitude in managing state budget crises, and he has yet to fix a single one of the major political problems that led to his own election via the only recall of an American governor in the last 80 years.
And yet, the idea of a new recall to rid Sacramento of its current leading man - now being actively floated by the ultra- wealthy and powerful state prison guards union - makes little sense.

Arnold Schwarzenegger will speak at the University at Buffalo on Jan. 27 as part of UB's Distinguished Speakers Series.
UB last month released the lineup for the 2010-11 season, which begins next week, but did not reveal the student choice.
