CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- When space shuttle Atlantis returns from its final mission in July, it's coming home to stay at Kennedy Space Center.
NASA administrator Charles Bolden made the announcement that the visitors center will get to keep and display Atlantis for visitors and for the thousands of Kennedy Space Center workers who spent their careers launching the shuttles into orbit over the past three decades.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Atlantis' heat shield is safe enough for the shuttle to return to Earth, mission managers decided Wednesday, a day before the space shuttle was scheduled to land in Florida. A forecast for thunderstorms appeared to be the main obstacle.
For the shuttle's first landing opportunity at 11:55 a.m. MDT today, thunderstorms were predicted to be within 34 miles of the landing strip at Kennedy Space Center and clouds within 8,000 feet, both violations of flight rules.
