In 2005 the ASPCA, as part of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, helped the city get thousands of dollars in grant money to launch an anti-hoarding program. Administered by the city's Department of Health, the pilot project pairs Cardona with a social worker who hooks up troubled hoarders with medical care, food stamps, and other services.

Maria is a 40 year-old from Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan. She was repeatedly receiving a bill from, a local hospital for her recent visit to the ER. Maria is uninsured and could not afford the $191.00 charge. She was scared and did not know where to go for help. Fortunately, Maria found NYC MCCAP - the New York City Managed Care Consumer Assistance Program - which quickly determined that she was eligible for public health insurance, helped her get coverage, and made sure that the bill was paid by the hospital. Thanks to NYC MCCAP, we were able to ensure that Maria has one less thing to worry about during these difficult financial times.

I was listening to the radio on my way to work recently. A listener asked the radio hosts for advice on an ethical dilemma. The listener said that she had a best friend who got married two years ago, but never changed her last name.
The friend's husband has a great job and travels often for work. He's only home eight or nine days a month. They live an affluent lifestyle. They have a boat that sleeps six and a new truck for towing it. They have a big house and flat screen televisions. There's a new camper and another truck. All vehicles are registered in Florida.

NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of New York City public elementary school teachers reported in a survey that their students are making healthier food choices because of CookShop, a nutrition education program of the Food Bank For New York City that is funded and supported by the USDA. This finding is significant at a time when 43 percent of the city's elementary school children are overweight or obese.
Education is the best path out of poverty, but when children are poorly nourished, they don't perform as well in school. The ill effects are long-term and far-reaching," said Lucy Cabrera, Ph.D., the Food Bank's President and CEO. "CookShop improves their food choices and inspires families to come together around the kitchen table for healthy, affordable meals.
