In recent weeks drought in the Horn of Africa has affected a number of countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, and Djibouti. The serious decline in crop production increased food prices in many countries, and in a country like Somalia already ravaged by a prolonged civil war, caused the mass exodus of the civilian population. Since the start of the year, 54,000 Somalis have crossed into Ethiopia according to the United Nations; with more than 1,700 arriving daily in Ethiopia, and 1,400 in Kenya. Malnutrition rates are alarmingly high with at least 50 percent of Somal...

Move with purpose, not to impress," the chef begins his tutorial. A smooth arc, slicing in a clean motion. Move the knife away from yourself, to the right of your hip. Exposing the pigs shoulder, teasing a flexible blade against the bone, Jason Story sets his feet just so. To his left stands a tentative, wide-eyed, would-be apprentice. Its after-hours on a weeknight in early April at Three Little Pigs Charcuterie & Salumi, the new charcuterie in Washington. Yet its spotless, cool workroom below hums with activity. The 27-year-old chef, who opened the small shop in March with his fiancee, chef Carolina Gomez, is midway through breaking down a 200-pound Old Spot from Evensong Farm in Sharpsburg, Md. After the evenings work, Story will spend days and weeks smoking, salting and curing pork...

MANCHESTER, Iowa - Near record-high corn prices and the lowest reserves in 15 years have reinvigorated the debate over ethanol.
S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, rejected criticism of the country's ethanol policy, blaming the negative hype over subsidies and increased production on "Big Oil" and "Big Grocery" at a meeting with the Delaware County Farm Bureau Friday morning in Manchester. He said ethanol has been used as a scapegoat by food manufacturers to raise food prices, and that oil companies also have been trying to reduce ethanol production for their own business interests.
