Monday is World Hunger Day, and we must address rising food prices all over the planet. Food prices rose 8 percent from December to March, the World Bank reports. But the escalating cost of food does not affect everyone in the same way. A typical American family spends no more than 10 percent of its budget on food, whereas the world's poorest 2 billion spend between 50 percent and 70 percent of their meager income on food.
Only 16% of Americans feel better off financially now than they did a year ago, but they are optimistic for improvements in the future. NEW YORK, April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rising fuel and food prices are blunting gains from the economic recovery, hurting Americans' ability to save and weighing on consumer sentiment, according to a survey conducted for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants by Harris Interactive. The national phone survey of 1,005 adults was conducted March 23-27 in advance of Financial Literacy Month in April.
Rising gas prices. Rising mortgage costs. Rising health care costs. Now rising food prices. The rising costs of these non- discretionary items have caused significant strain on personal and family budgets. Making the adjustment from paying $15 for a half- tank of gas to paying $30 for a half-tank of gas is one thing - despite our heavy frustrations, we try hard to adjust our mileage and cut back on gasoline consumption to soften the impact on our family budgets. However, when the price of two bags of groceries now only buys one, it is difficult to make the same cutbacks on food consumption, especially when young children and infants are involved. Rising food prices across the globe have been called the "silent tsunami" because they have caused hunger levels in many poor countries to rea...
LONDON Even as consumers face soaring energy costs, rising food prices and higher mortgages or rent, it seems clear they're not prepared to forgo many of life's little treats: Makers of alcohol, cigarettes and candy are all reporting healthy sales amid the gloom.
World Bank host Open Forum against backdrop of U.S. foreign aid cuts NEW YORK, April 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today and tomorrow, April 14-15, International leaders will be discussing rising and volatile food prices at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
In early December 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research announced its determination that the US economy had been in recession since December 2007, notwithstanding the positive growth in real gross domestic product registered during the first two quarters of 2008. Still, the economy grew by a quarterly average of nearly 1.9% during the first two quarters of 2008, fueled in part by a significant improvement in net exports as well as fiscal stimulus-supported personal consumption. Labor market conditions have weakened noticeably since late 2007 -- since the recession began in December 2007, a total of 3.6 million jobs have been lost. Rising food prices and the energy price surge through the middle of last year boosted headline inflation, which peaked at 5.6% in the 12 months throu...
The price of food, especially meat and dairy products, could spike this year, agricultural experts from the University of Missouri say. Analysts from MU's Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute predict grocery costs could rise by more than 4 percent as the farm community recovers from the recession.
MINNEAPOLIS - Rising gasoline prices have been getting all the attention, but the cost of another, more important staple is actually rising even more: food. In the past year, food prices have increased 3.7 percent and are on track to jump by as much as 7 percent by year's end. The current increase is more than double the 1.8 percent jump seen the year before, according to the consumer price index.
Soaring gasoline and food prices are a real downer for consumers in the Buffalo Niagara region. A quarterly survey of consumer confidence in major cities in New York State found that local consumers are less willing to spend today than they were during the final months of 2010.
