  • Interspersed throughout the food portraits are essays by current food luminaries such as Marion Nestle (nutritionist and noted authority on food politics), Corby Kummer (Atlantic Monthly editor and writer about the Slow Food movement) and Michael Pollan (UC Berkeley professor of journalism and author of The Botany of Desire and The Omnivore's Dilemma). One essay by Francine R. Kaufman is called "Diabesity." Kaufman heads the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. Her essay is a powerful piece about the link between diabetes, obesity and soda consumption. Presenting the results of a 2001 study done, as well as her own experiences with a patient at the center, Kaufman concludes that the availability of soda on school campuses in the U.S. is contributi...

  • On misty winter nights in my hometown of Mandalay, my father used to take us to the noisy night bazaar, where storm lanterns swung from poles and the aromas from open-air restaurants and food stalls hung in the air. • The most acute phase of the global economic crisis appears to have passed. Output growth has resumed in most parts of the world. It appears, however, that the upturn in advanced economies will only be moderate and that the economies of many countries will be marked by considerable spare output capacity and high unemployment ahead. The crisis has given rise to new imbalances that will dampen the recovery. Weak prospects have contributed to a marked decline in interest rate expectations in many countries. New information suggests that the recovery in the Norwegian economy is continuing, but that capacity utilization is probably somewhat lower than anticipated in autumn 2009. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but it can mitigate the most severe effects when the ...

  • The growth in the flow of international remittance income in many developing countries has increased attention towards remittances as a development mechanism. This study attempts to understand to what degree labor patterns are affected by the receipt of remittances. Using nationally representative household income and expenditure data for Mexico, I analyze the effect of remittance income on labor supply decisions. I find that household labor supply in response to remittance income is consistent with findings which measure labor supply behavior in the presence of other forms of unearned income in different settings. That is, remittance receipts are associated with fewer hours of work and income elasticities are estimated in the range of -.006 to -.03. This finding attenuates to some degr...
