More than 10.000 documents for food aid programs
  • Former Secretary of Agriculture John Block in his Dec. 23 Op-Ed column, "Feed the hungry; America should lead global strategy," made an interesting and instructive point by advocating a more integrated approach in U.S. . In this regard, he cogently indicated that a comprehensive strategy would effectively address hunger today as well as in the long run. Because it is commonly known that hunger crises arise mostly from human conflicts and bad governance (misuse of public resources, poor judgment in social and economic decision-making, to name just a few examples), it should be a priority for America to spread and promote the values of democracy around the world, help prevent looming conflicts in vulnerable areas and assist in the conception and implementation of self-suf...

  • As America increases its food assistance, it's really important that we transform the way that food aid is delivered. In my State of the Union Address this year, I called on Congress to support a proposal to purchase up to nearly 25 percent of food assistance directly from farmers in the developing world. And the reason you do that is, in order to break the cycle of famine that we're having to deal with too often in the modern era, it's important to help build up local agriculture.

  • WASHINGTON, April 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A team of top level executives from the North American Millers' Association met with U.S. government officials to garner support for food aid programs. The Administration has been holding back PL 480 Title II funds each year for potential emergencies, to the detriment of long-term development projects. Current non-emergency funding falls far short of the level mandated by Congress -- 75 percent of the Title II food aid budget. During a fact-finding mission to Ethiopia in December, several of the NAMA executives saw first-hand how food aid is most effective when used in direct feeding programs to help the most vulnerable people and in development programs that promote sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency. Inconsistent funding for food aid pr...

  • House rejects farm subsidy cuts WASHINGTON -- The Republican-led House voted to slash domestic and international food aid Thursday while rejecting cuts to farm subsidies. A spending bill to fund the nation's food and farm programs would cut the Women, Infants and Children program, which offers food aid and educational support for low-income mothers and their children, by $868 million, or 13 percent. An international food assistance program that provides emergency aid and agricultural development would drop by more than $450 million, one-third of the program's budget. The legislation passed 217-203. The bill would trim the Food and Drug Administration's $2.5 billion budget by almost 12 percent, straining the agency's ability to implement a new food safety law signed by President Barack...

  • Spiraling food prices are hitting private charities and relief agencies, with some of the world's largest aid providers warning they will soon be forced to slash programs on their existing budgets. Even as the numbers of needy and desperate grow, governments and relief organizers are trying to figure out how to avert an immediate crisis while planning for a long-range disaster.

  • After touring the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya on Wednesday, former Dayton Congressman Tony Hall is urging Americans to write to their political leaders in Washington about proposed cuts to emergency food aid, to donate to charities that support emergency hunger programs, and to pray for those who are starving and dying. It's important that we cut the budget, we have spent too much money, but you don't cut the poorest of the poor," he said in a phone interview Thursday from Nairobi "These people are fleeing for their lives. They just want to survive.

  • WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans have quietly maneuvered to prevent a House spending bill from chipping away at federal farm subsidies, instead forging ahead with much larger cuts to domestic and international food aid. The GOP move will probably prevent up to $167 million in cuts in direct payments to farmers, including some of the nation's wealthiest. Meanwhile, the annual bill to pay for food and farm programs next year would cut food aid for low-income mothers and children by $685 million, about 10 percent below this year's budget.
