Politics, of course, demands compromise. However, as Christians, we are taught to be uncompromising. In all things we have, as a friend of mine put it, "an obligation to surrender our will to the will of Christ in our lives. One's spiritual/religious beliefs should direct every decision that is made. There is no decision too small to surrender to God." To help discern God's will, we have help in the spirit that speaks to us through prayer, and scriptural study.

After graduating, proudly, from journalism school at Marshall, she worked as a reporter in Beckley and covered cops for the Gazette. Next, she moved to New York and landed a job with public television. Tired of big-city life, she returned to her Elm Street homeplace. During 11 years in state government, she wrote speeches for Gov. Aaron Taylor, a fourth-grade student at Freetown Elementary School, was among 434 students from 42 states to receive a $1,000 college scholarship from the Carson Scholars Fund.
In addition to the scholarship, which is invested on the students' behalf until they attend college, each Carson Scholar receives a medal and a certificate and is invited to attend a banquet in their honor. This year's banquet was held at Martin's West in Woodlawn with newscaster Sam Donaldson serving as Master of Ceremonies.

The past few years of Emma McCollam's life have been about self- discovery. With her out-of-the-box thinking, she has channeled her creativity in different directions, and found what suits her best.
Currently a student at UNM-Taos, McCollam has enrolled in many interesting courses. "I have really enjoyed my ceramics class because it's a comfortable environment, with a lot of nice people to work with. Another class I really like is Latin dance workout because it's fun, and good exercise too," said McCollam.
