As the arena of spiritually focused music has burgeoned, genre divisions have naturally occurred as with any other kind of music. For Christians, one genre division is children's Sunday-school-type music, typically accompanied by simple melodies, repetitive gestures and easy-to-follow lyrics about God's love. For his adaptation of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," director Tim Burton has mercilessly shaved about an hour off the 1979 musical's running time, and the opening number was the first to go. It's a real shame, since "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" has some of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical's best music and lyrics and sets the tone for the delights that follow. Luckily, there aren't many other disappointments in this "Todd," which is as brutal and bloody as the legendary man himself.

In other words, even if you have all the pieces of the puzzle -- the massive hooks, the heart-on-sleeve passion and yearning, the rather brilliant production, the falsetto-laced codas, the hope-tinged lyrics -- you are not guaranteed to come up with "The Joshua Tree" when all of those pieces are put together. Mylo Xyloto" is a very good album. This wouldn't represent any sort of failure were it not for the fact that it so clearly wants to be a GREAT album. It's a thoroughly enjoyable collection of short stories that yearns to be its generation's greatest novel.
Mrs. Pinkney employs the blues to drive her splendid book. Like a powerful car, the author's text is in constant motion as it speeds forward trying to demolish the Jim Crow (segregation) laws of the South that said "Black people and white people could not mix." The author cleverly personifies Jim Crow as a bird with "bony wings" who did nothing but "peck peck peck." Mr. Pinkney^ dark, whirling, swirling illustrations bring his wife's superb text to life. Dr. [Nikki Giovanni] incorporates some of these spiritual songs (songs of the spirit) into her discourse as she guides'us through a brief history of slavery to the post-Civil War era, bringing it into the present represented by hip-hop music.
