We climbed out of the white Lincoln Navigator ready to be thrilled. The two-hour ride from the Red Rock country of Sedona was behind us, and the alien grandeur of the Grand Canyon was just yards ahead. It was early December and beyond chilly, but we had prepared for any weather eventuality. Or so we thought. My husband, our two teenage daughters (one of whom was furious that we weren't in the Caribbean) and I walked toward the South Rim at Yavapai Point, where there's an indoor observation station with a scale model of the canyon. NEW YORK/DUBLIN (Reuters) - New York would welcome Barclays Plc if the bank decided to move its headquarters from Britain, the city's mayor said, in comments that suggested the Big Apple might be courting the bank. Barclays is considering moving its headquarters from London to dodge British capital rules, which the bank sees as onerous, people familiar with the matter said. The loss of the more than 300-year- old bank would be a blow to London's prestige as a financial center. Other banks are also considering leaving the City.

The slow-moving fog crept in from Penobscot Bay into the lush green fields of Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville. It was May, but it felt more like early April and inside the well-appointed kitchen and dining room in the post-and-beam barn where Annemarie Ahearn and Ladleah Dunn cook and teach each week, it felt as cozy as a winters night. Pots of raw whole milk simmered on the stove becoming cheese as Dunn added rennet and acid. Ahearn methodically chopped onions and basil, and boiled noodles for lasagna. Irene Yadao, operations manager for the farm, zipped around the kitchen, snapping pictures and assisting the 10 guests from Maine and beyond, who were assembled there to learn from Dunn and Ahearn how to make ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, and then eat Ahearns carefully prepared dinner.

OSLO, Norway - A Norwegian who dressed as a police officer to gun down summer campers killed at least 80 people at an island retreat, police said early Saturday. It took investigators several hours to realize the full scope of the massacre, which followed an explosion in nearby Oslo that killed seven and that police say was set off by the same suspect. Police initially said about 10 were killed at the forested camp on the island of Utoya, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters early Saturday they had discovered many more victims.
