Larry Burgess will present a program on "Images of Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society and the Flower Show: The last 100 years" when the Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Redlands Church of the Nazarene, 1307 E. Citrus Ave.
The meeting is open to the public.

It's the season for flower, landscape and garden shows. They are the place to experience the first hint of spring, remember the joy of gardening, indulge in some fantasies, and do some learning and shopping.
The three nearest -- Rochester, Toronto, Western New York's "Plantasia" and the famous Philadelphia show -- are all worth your time. Each is different. If you are new to these shows, let me hone your expectations and share some advice.

The Philadelphia Flower Show will be the highlight of a two-day trip departing March 12. Cost of $275 includes lodging at Embassy Suites, dinner on Moshulu Tall Ship, admission to the Marc Chagall exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art or guided tour of Philadelphia and breakfast. A March 19 day trip to the Boston Flower Show includes an Italian feast at Maggiano's Restaurant and time at Quincy Market. Cost is $110.
The Rhode Island Flower Show will include lunch at Cassarino's in the Little Italy section of Federal Hill, Feb. 26. Cost is $115.

Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society's 100th annual flower show will be held April 21 and 22 at Esri, 380 New York St., Redlands.
Celebrating 100 Years!" is the theme of the show, and the weekend includes a garden tour and sale of uncommon plants.

The Portland Flower Show is going to be standing alone next month - sort of like a specimen tree in the front yard.
The Massachusetts Horticulture Society last fall suspended its New England Spring Flower Show for 2009 and, more recently, Bangor Beautiful canceled its Bangor Flower Show for this year.

Southern California boasts some of the very best weather. To go with that good weather, the area offers a variety of specialty flower shows such as the recent Southland Orchid Show, "Literally Orchids," at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino.

Accomplished floral arrangers from Memphis and all over the country are coming to Dixon Gallery and Gardens today to prepare their entries for "M3D On the Edge," the 15th Memphis Flower Show presented by Memphis Garden Club.
The arrangers will interpret in flowers 50 pieces of three- dimensional art by local artists. They are seeing for the first time the works of artists Maysey Craddock, Wayne Edge, Ted Faiers, Joyce Gingold, Terri Jones, Greely Myatt, Brian Russell, Allison Smith and Carroll Todd.

Gardeners want something they can touch, see and smell while their gardens are on winter break. The catalogs are getting dog- eared. Flower shows often fill that need.
Unfortunately, the Cincinnati Flower Show will not be held in 2011.
